I am having a problem with my 1998 MACH 1 TRIPLE, I know that it has been discussed before but I would really like to hear from someone who has actually solved the problem of plug fowling.

All my plugs are soaking wet when I check them and I'm going through oil like crazy. My sled does not smoke so I'm alittle confussed. The fowling only occurs on startup.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks.

I have a 98 mach 1 and had the same probem at first. Totally FRUSTRATING!!!
Most of the time I only had to replace the middle spark plug with a new one or clean up old one.
Since I bought this sled from a dealer and was allready aware of problems with cold starting, they told me to: start the sled like normal: let sled warm up and DO
NOT TOUCH THE THROTTLE until the temp. guage lifts up! WELL,only went
through 9 spark plugs that year. UHG!! :banghead:
After having this sled for 4 years I finally got it right the past two years.
First regular standard spark plugs like NGK BR9ES can work just fine.(1320 miles that season and never changed a plug)
This past year (still a little gun shy) tried NGK BR9EYA witch was recommended
by a Artic Cat dealer for there tripples. Again 1450 miles no problems this year!
Hear's what I did. 1st Increase idle speed to 2500-2800 RPMS 2nd
Check your oil pump settings!! Mine was set a little rich and would not retract all
the way after you give it gas! You will notice the cable bowing by the pump if it
is not retracting all the way. Hence, this could be why you are using oil and going
through plugs. 3rd Spray and clean oil pump with a light oil every year!! This
was probably my biggest problem! OH! By the way. It is hard to get to unless
you take off the exhaust canister. 4th After I start it, I still warm it up by giving
it just a little bit of gas and hold 4000-4300 RPMS until the temp. guage lifts.
Then I will still baby sled until fully warm then giver hell and show the boys this
old sled can still fly!! I got 6000 miles on mine and going strong yet with no electrical problems. :beerchug:
Also check your brake calliper for worn pins witch the brake pads rest on. Brakes
will not release quick enough for really aggressive driving!
So don't give up on this sled and I hope this may point you in the right direction.
Talk to me about other things like cornering, ride, top end ,etc..
Otherwise, Happy Trails! :div20:

I just purchased a baby mach this year, a 98 formula III and am having trouble with getting it to hook up, the machine is way to loose, even while cornering it will slide out from under me. and when it comes to braking u better have clean undie's handy :augen41:

The main problem with fouling spark plugs is that your sled is setup from the factory to have the proper gas/air/oil mix at -20 degrees F. If it is not that temperature outside, then you WILL be running rich. There's a bunch of ways to fix this problem.

You could get a Tempa-Flow, which automatically compensates for different temperatures so that it's always running perfect.

Get smaller main and pilot jets to get engine to run how it should. The only problem with that is when it gets really cold out, you risk running too lean and seizing your engine.

Get smaller pilot jet, most people seem to like 45's instead of the stock 50's. Remember you changed pilot jets, and don't run at idle much when it's really cold out.

Leave the jetting stock and run BR9EYA plugs. It will still be running rich, but won't foul out as often.

I have stock jetting in my 97 Mach 1, except for the 45 pilots, and I run the BR9EYA plugs. I can run the same plugs for at least 1 season (about 1000 miles) and not have them foul out. I have also ridden when it's been -25 degrees F outside, rode about 200 miles that day, and plugs were still a nice brown color.

Another thing is to let the sled idle until the sled is warm when you first start it up. I usually wait until the temp gauge needle is at least 1/4 of the way up, which is usually where it is when I ride my sled. If you just start and go, you'll tend to foul the plugs a lot more.

HI FORMULA34ME
Ya know, the ck3 frame just isn't that good a sled in the tight turns. It's like I have to work alot harder and pay attention to everything around me because yes, this sled doesn't STOP VERY QUICK!!! I only run 96 studs and now that they are getting worn out I am also sliding out around corners. BUT I do not like driving the "point and shoot style" and the sled doen't push and roll in the corners. So I am faster now and more confident but to each his own? May be 99 and up are better but everybody I talk to seems to think the same way.
My shock settings for all round driving. Mind you, I am only 170+ lbs.
FRONT SHOCKS-3/4 stiff. Springs are soft enough. Less roll in turns.
FRONT TRACK SHOCK-1/2 way.
REAR SHOCKS-3/4 stiff. All the way gives me too much kick back!!
[ I have a new shock in also. SKI DOOS NEW IMPROVED It's ok?! ]
I drive where there is alot of turns which I love and if you are keeping up to me you are one of those guys who loves it on the edge!
This sleds strong point is it's ride is smoother on smaller bumps and it has great throttle response and take off. It's funny when you can keep up to some of the really fast sleds out there because people foget how fast these tripples can be. Aside from the f7s out there now I thought this was the fastast 700 you could get.
I GUESS I didn't give you much help without buying a bunch after market parts etc.. I'M happy with it and looking at giving it to my daughter and if I need a extra sled. I'M getting another sled that is better in the corners and it is time to get something with less miles on it. 6000MI on my MACHY dunno.gif
WELL SEE YA!

HEY, 97MACH 1 , You are absolutly correct about letting the tripples warm up!!

NOTHING SOUNDS LIKE A TRIPPLE WFO!!

i just put some triple pipes on my f3 and can someone tell me if these carbjettings are good or you have something better then that...i know you haft to put the mach 1 settings but are the settings good....please right back dont want to burn down..

ive seen on some of them with the long needles worn with the jets. replacing them and the jets usually does the trick, but you can cheat by dropping the needles one position to clean it up. worn inlet needles are also a culprit. 2800 rpm sounds high and hard on 100 dollar belts but just m2c.gif revs_rule.gif
