I am having a problem with my 1998 MACH 1 TRIPLE, I know that it has been discussed before but I would really like to hear from someone who has actually solved the problem of plug fowling.
All my plugs are soaking wet when I check them and I'm going through oil like crazy. My sled does not smoke so I'm alittle confussed. The fowling only occurs on startup.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks.
I have a 98 mach 1 and had the same probem at first. Totally FRUSTRATING!!!
Most of the time I only had to replace the middle spark plug with a new one or clean up old one.
Since I bought this sled from a dealer and was allready aware of problems with cold starting, they told me to: start the sled like normal: let sled warm up and DO
NOT TOUCH THE THROTTLE until the temp. guage lifts up! WELL,only went
through 9 spark plugs that year. UHG!! :banghead:
After having this sled for 4 years I finally got it right the past two years.
First regular standard spark plugs like NGK BR9ES can work just fine.(1320 miles that season and never changed a plug)
This past year (still a little gun shy) tried NGK BR9EYA witch was recommended
by a Artic Cat dealer for there tripples. Again 1450 miles no problems this year!
Hear's what I did. 1st Increase idle speed to 2500-2800 RPMS 2nd
Check your oil pump settings!! Mine was set a little rich and would not retract all
the way after you give it gas! You will notice the cable bowing by the pump if it
is not retracting all the way. Hence, this could be why you are using oil and going
through plugs. 3rd Spray and clean oil pump with a light oil every year!! This
was probably my biggest problem! OH! By the way. It is hard to get to unless
you take off the exhaust canister. 4th After I start it, I still warm it up by giving
it just a little bit of gas and hold 4000-4300 RPMS until the temp. guage lifts.
Then I will still baby sled until fully warm then giver hell and show the boys this
old sled can still fly!! I got 6000 miles on mine and going strong yet with no electrical problems. :beerchug:
Also check your brake calliper for worn pins witch the brake pads rest on. Brakes
will not release quick enough for really aggressive driving!
So don't give up on this sled and I hope this may point you in the right direction.
Talk to me about other things like cornering, ride, top end ,etc..
Otherwise, Happy Trails! :div20:
