The seson is coming  . Spring turkey hunting is a blast grinning-smiley-023.gif I can't wait to go, I got 2 tags for this spring. The whole thing is so exciting. Sneaking out in the dark...waiting for the first gobble, getting into location, calling them in...its a blast luxhello.gif

I got video footage from 2 years ago, a tom came in and circled my decoy about 12 times, then finally jumped it and started doing his thing, and I finally shot him. Laughed my ass off. My decoy was all torn up, but it was worth it.

I have 5 toms to date I believe.

How about you guys?

Hope you were an ethical hunter and let that Tom finish his business first.

I watched shell shocked 5 this past weekend... It got me ready for the season after sledding.

HaHa, oh yeah, that brings up something else.... I use the Remington Heavy Shot 3 1/2" with the Remington Super Full choke tube in my 870. 2 Years ago I shot one of my turkeys at 50 yards, and last year I didn't have much time to hunt, and on my second day out I had 2 Toms walking by at 75 Yards, so I took a pop, Open sights and all, The Bird Dropped in its tracks. I had the rangefinder in my pocket to back it up.

My uncle uses the same setups, but with a scope. For some reason his gun gets Extremely tight groups. Him and all of his buddies all use his gun. He isn't really a BSer and he claims they have dropped Toms between 80 and 90 yards.

Almost takes the fun out of it. I definetly get them within 30 yards whenever I can. :div20:
nightfireboy
I like to get them close too, but last year i was stalking one and all the closer i could get was 70-75 yards and i took the shot, i swear the bead on my barrel coverd the whole bird it seemed like, but it died right there, that was that big 26 pounder with the big beard. and that was only a 3 inch shell, this year im using 3 1/2. another story i got was last year when my grandpa shot one and it flew away and he swore that he missed but i thought i seen it fly into the side of a barn on a nearby farm, sure shit i walked over there and he was hiding in some bushes, and still well alive!! so i took that hevi shot 3 inch and blasted his head clear off right above the beard about 3-4 inches, i wasnt too humane but it was fun!

I hunt in Washington Co sometimes, and up in Waupaca county sometimes. I think its zones 30 and 22.

This spring I got 2 permits for Waupaca. I usually have really good luck up there. I got the 4'th week and last week. It sucks hunting so late, but I have had really good luck in the late seasons the last couple years.

2 tags cripes...I got my last choice this year AGAIN...6th season.

You guys with guns are cheating.....how about a bow?? I got my first one this fall...hen, but I let the tom's go for this spring.

I had a friend in college shoot 28+ pound birds two years in a row near LaCrosse.....now that's a big turkey :augen41:

Hell yeah, those are Big, every year I hear of one turkey around here that is 28 plus pounds.
I always want to try my bow, but I never have enough time. In fall I always plan on shooting one with my bow when I am bowhunting, but they never show up
Last fall I was sitting in one of my new spots bowhunting 1 week before the fall turkey season opened and I was seeing turkeys all over, I had 8 Toms eating acorns within 30 yards of me for over an hour and they never seen me. The next 2 weeks after the turkey season opened I bowhunted there hoping to get one of the Tom's and wouldn't you know it, they never showed :banghead:

I love turkey hunting, the spring season is great but I really love the fall turkey season bow only. It's a real challenge to get one with a bow, I've got one hen so far with the bow, a couple small toms (18lbs) and jakes with the gun.
3holercat
just love being in the spring woods listening to the love sick toms!
thou's thundrous gobbles will always wipe the melted snow blues away.
i found using my popup blind works good to hide my bow draw!
my 870 with a hastings .665 t-choke throws 14 #5 pellets 2oz. buffered 3in. federals at 40 yrds in the spine bones of the turkey target. wish i could use that for duck hunting lol

lol, you can do that, it may or may not work for you, I guess it depends how patient you are.
Get yourself a turkey hunting video or two, you can pick up some tips from them. Videos always make thing look easy because they only show the successfull hunts, but you will at least see how its done.

You can surely go sit somwhere with your decoy and a call, and wait, but it can be alot easier if you pick up on a few tricks and know when to move, when to call, and so on.

Ever since the snow melted here I've been thinking turkey, will probably be out of my mind by the 25th of April. Taking opening day off, going hunting for turkey, last year was my first and I got an 18 pound with 1 inch spurs and a 7 1/2 inch beard, best hunting going. I drive about 2 hours to a friends farm to hunt so when we figured out how much I spent for gear, gas and other first year stuff that tom cost me about $20 a pound, every cent was worth it.

3holercat
you have to find a place in the roof of your mouth, where the sides seal good. you mite have to trim it a bit. you force the air over your tongue under the call diaphram. don't walk with it in your mouth you mite swollow it and choke :augen41: know now i know this?
cmscat50
I was out in the woods last night and saw like 25 deer and 4 toms. One tom was BIG. I can't wait even though I have the last season here in WI

I was out scouting before work this morning, they were gobbling like crazy

I can't believe how early they were gobbling! I was running a little late, I was walking out there at 5:40 and ther were gobbling allready! They flew down at 5:55. Sounded like 3 Toms, I never got a good look at them, but I didn't want to get too close.

Im gonna be taking my cousin out next weekend when it opens. He never went before and he got a tag so Im gonna call and video tape for him. I have more fun calling and video taping my buddies shooting there birds than I do shooting them myself! Its great

OH MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow1.gif

We pounded the turkeys the past 2 days!!!

My Dad and I both took a bird, both birds were 22 pounds! Mine had a 8 inch beard and my Dad had a 9 inch beard.

A friend of ours went out and this morning shot a 25 pounder with 2 beards , one was 6 inches and the other was 10 inches.

Otherwise the birds were going just nuts where we were, they were gobbling from 5:30 - around 8 am then a little lull and then there were spikes all AM. I called my turkey in around 10 am, he was strutting in for about 200 yards! My Dads turkey came in with 2 hens and he was struting all around also.

This was a very exciting hunt, way different then past years when the birds would go silent around 7 am.

I will post picks tomorrow when my Dad comes down with his camera,

Later,
Pat
