Torque!
I am running a D&D 1010cc in a 2004 ZR 900. I've put 2600 miles on it this year without problems but decided to install a Digitron EGT readout to be on the safe side. My plugs are quite dark and piston wash is good. The beast has 560 main jets in it and my needles are up one notch from stock. (not exactly a fuel miser) I was hoping to be able to down fuel a bit as all signs seemed to show pleanty of fuel. The EGT however is showing me max temperatures of 1280 at full throttle and 1240 cruising at steady 7000rpm. The dealer tells me I should be aiming for 1180 to 1200 as max temperatures and suggests I richen the mixture. Other tuners have told me that anything under 1300 is safe as long as you don't hold it at the lean spot for too long. What is your opinion, more fuel, less fuel, what is safe?

P.S. the 1010 with proper clutching and higher diamond drive gearing is awesome!!

You can not go by what anybody tells you should see for an EGT reading. Every sled is different and every sled must first be properly set-up in order to determine the correct EGT reading. You must tune your sled based on plug colour and piston wash and only once you have done that can you see what temps the EGT's tell you are right for your motor. You cannot tune with EGTs until you are properly set-up and know what the right EGT reading is for your sled when it is properly set-up.

You have allready discovered this by telling us that your plugs are dark and wash is there. It sounds like your motor is telling it is rich, so the EGT readings you are seeing are rich numbers for your motor. Do a full and proper baseline set-up on your carbs and get the plugs nice and tan and wash down to optimal levels at all throttle positons. Once you do that get a Tempa-Flow, or ATTAC and throw away the EGT's so you can enjoy the ride instead of watching a guage.

First of all the egt temp will change with the distance that the probe is from the cylinder, the farther out the closer to the flame front you will be and the temps will be higher. I run my egt at 7 inches from the piston skirt. with the proper wash I see 1250-1275 at wot...... If you look at the cat performance book all the egt readings are taken from a shorter distancs and they are Quite a bit lower tahn the ones I see. I have both a1035 hooper and a 1160 sever and both are the same.....
