not sure but I think they have something to do with equalizing pressure - I would get some other feedback on this though. mine were plugged too. cleaned with carb cleaner and paper clip.

cylinder pressure passes through the small hole and opens the valve. It takes cylinder pressure to open it and a spring to close it. RB

Never knew about the hole .
Just did them with new gaskets 25 miles ago.

Is there a tip on the bolts ?
Two are tedious, with that 1/8 of a turn at a time with the wrench. :banghead:
Petty, but one of those pesky designs.

Use some heat on the cylinder where the VES bolts go in, otherwise you may either strip the threads or twist the bolt off completely. :banghead: :banghead:

Also, you should start the engine and let it warm up before working on the valves. It softens up the carbon on the valves, makes it easier to remove and clean.

On the newer power valves the bolt that holds them to the block goes all the way through the valve. Real easy to remove. Now the question is can you put the newer valve on the old engine??????????? RB

I just cleaned my valves last night, is there any secrect to getting it to come apart with out ripping the gasket.I took it out slow and carefully it just ripped.
The old gasket was also hard to clean completely off, any tips on that.
Probably shoulda done it when it was warm.I did take the valves out with the engine warm but by the time I was done and couldnt get new gaskets till the next day.
Just lookin for some insight !

I just used a little blue RTV silicone on both sides of the gasket. I havent had a problem, and used the same gaskets for a few years now. :beer2:

Thanks Badazz, Ill give it a try.
I was thinkin about that but wasnt sure if it would be harder to get off.
Sounds good so I will try it.

pipe cleaners on the exhaust port hole clean them up good.
