I'm a new sled owner, and I'll be registering in VT (I live in NJ). I got a quote from Foremost Insurance. Can anyone recommend others so I can get some rates to compare?
There was a *huge* difference between Liability and then Liability/Theft/Fire and then Liability/Theft/Fire/Collision. What do most people do?
Thank you!

If you got a quote direct from Foremost thats probably the best your gonna get. This is as far as I know. There are others out there but you usually need another policy with them.
Oh ya I forgot to add the newer the sled the more expensive, the larger the cc the more expensive and of course the more options the $$. I insure 4 sleds 2 have the minimum and 2 that will be going to Canada have fire and theft.
1995 ZR440 with 50/100/25 and 500.00 deductable 37.00
2000 ZR600 same as above 97.00
2001 ZR800 same as above but with fire and theft 160.00
2004 F-7 same as above with fire and theft 268.00
hope this helps, it is expensive to ride in Vermont no doupt about it, but its worth it

Do a search on insurance on this site.......there has been a lot of discussion on it. I have found that the agency or agent matters as much or more than the company. I got quotes for foremost thru 2 different agencies, 1 twice as much as the other. I went with liability only (100/300) and pay $150 for my 02 zl 600.

I just bought a 2003 Ski Doo Legend (new) and a 2004 Polaris Frontier (only 500 miles). Both sleds are 4 Strokes.
This is what she told me about coverage:
$500 deductible
100K person
300K accident
50K property
10K uninsured motorist
The prices were $279 for liability, $589 for fire/theft/liability, and $682 for fire/theft/collision/liability for both sleds.
What do you think of these rates? Should I insure somewhere else if VT is expensive?
I'll go search on insurance. Thanks for the help!!!

Those rates dont look bad. This is who I get my Foremost insurance thru......they were the cheapest I could find. She has been great.

i have foremost and i pay 86 for lilability and 280 for comp (fire/theft/collision)
on 02 polaris XC 600

:frech32: Why would you register the sled in Vermont if you live in NJ? You are just throwing $ away. I believe the fee in NJ for a resident is $7. That's a bargin. If you register in VT it will cost you $22. There is no benefit registering in VT. In fact, they will probably bust your balls over the sales tax. It's alot easier in NJ.

Jinx, I used to teach in Belvidere! I'm now in Hunterdon County, near Oldwick. Where do you ride?
Artie, you've got it backwards. These are new sleds. NJ wants 6% sales tax. VT doesn't charge sales tax for out of state. Also, NJ DMV is @#$#$# hell. They want a *notarized* bill of sale and title or reg from the former owner to register the trailer. I'm doing everything VT--registering the trailer and sleds, getting the insurance and TMA, and RIDING. Hopefully the trails will be ok in 2 weeks--when I'll be there.

I lived in NJ for 35 years. Trust me wait to you deal with VDMV. They are going to bust your balls about sales tax. They don't care where or when you bought it. If you bought a sled 5 years ago in Maine, Vermont wants proof that sales tax was paid or you will pay it AGAIN. They also don't care what you paid, they go by the "blue book value. The only break you might get would be it the sled is older than 2005. No title and you might have some leeway with the value if you fight with them.
I know NJDMV is infamous for aggravation but you'd probably use the Washington Office on SH57 and that's one office that's pretty good.
I have ridden up here for years before I moved here permanently and believe it or not found NJ was easier to register in. (cheaper too) Good Luck

I add mine to my home owners insurance. Liability, fire, and theft run about $60 per year. (Minnesota)

Jacky,
I've been through the tax issue before. I have argued with Vt tax dept and talked to Bryant Watson of VAST, even got a refund for the one sled I was charged tax for. Only Vt residents have to pay tax a sled bought out of state. You can register
the sleds at the same time you get your TMA's. The trailer has to be registered with DMV, dont know if you can get a "new" reg without showing up at DMV in person.
I have the same coverage with 3 2002 sleds, no collision, only fire/theft for $290
for all. :cn:

I register in Me and run in Me and IP. I live in Ct. and insure the sleds in Me. thru Foremost. Two sleds, 2002 500 and 600Classics for $70 and $77 respectively for 50/100 lia, 25 property damage and 1000 medical.
The Me registration is easy and on-line but $60/sled is expensive compared to Vt.

Artie, I know Washington DMV well! If it comes to it, I'll go there b/c Flemington is a pain the butt!
Jinx, I haven't ridden in NJ since these are my first sleds. I've ridden almost exclusively in the Adirondacks, but this is the year for VT for me. Is Stokes good? I saw a few other parks up there on the list available for riding, too. I grew up in Hackettstown, so I know Allamuchy. You just ride on the (frozen) Muck?
barrysledxc, I will give Progressive a try.
Espe, DAMN those are low rates!! Would I have to pay tax on the sleds if I registered them in ME?
Thank you ALL for the feedback. I really apprecite it!!

Jacky, I used to live next to Stokes. It's not too bad for short runs or trial runs to check your sled out before a trip. If you park in the Sunrise Lot or off of Deckertown Tpke you can squeeze out 15 mile loops. It's not groomed so it gets beat pretty bad after a day or two. Just be sure to be registered and insured because the park rangers do patrol the parking areas.

artie pretty much covered stokes.....
if you connect over to High Point you can do about 60 miles with out going on the same trail twice, its not bad but does get bumpy quick,

Let me ask you Jersey folks about registering the trailer. If I need to register it in NJ, I see it can't be over 96" on the DMV site. For real??? Most Triton 2 place sleds are 101". What can I do about this?
The High Point 60 mile ride sounds interesting. Can you let me know more? I can ride mid-week (YES!) to avoid crowds and bumps.

Jacky, I had a 2 place Triton trailer that I purchased from a dealer in Flanders. I got a temp plate (cardboard) from him and I just registered it at DMV. (Newton DMV) I didn't encounter any problems. The issue of width never came up.

NJ guys, check this out:
http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/cit_registratio..._utilities.htmlwidth: 96"
They told me the width had to be on my bill of sale. I don't know what to do!
Jinx, once I register in VT, I'll consider registering in NJ to ride Stokes with you. Thanks for the invitation.
We finally have some snow coming!!!!!! Just in time. I head to WI on Monday to pick up my trailer and sleds. I'll be in VT by Weds night, God and weather permitting. I think we'll be in the Rutland area at a B&B that will let us bring our dogs.
Does anyone know the trails around Rutland? When they're snow covered and groomed (hoping they will be late next week), are they good?
Thanks!

I have a question about registering snowmobiles. If I live in CT and register here do I also have to register in VT or just pay VAST for a trail pass? Are sleds like cars in that you register in your home state but can ride in others?
ScottZL600
Jan 22 2005, 05:57 PM
Unfortunately sleds aren't like cars. So much depends on the state and reciprocity between the states. I live in NJ, register 3 of my four sleds in NY and 1 in NY and Vermont. I ride in Vermont mainly but also ride in NY.
You don't need a Vermont registered sled but you do have to have the VAST pass for which you pay a little extra for having an out of state registered sled.
They don't make it easy.

My reply to the question of trailer registration is this. I have 4 trailers, 2 snowmobile and 2 boat. 3 of the four are registered in NJ. They are all 101-102". Forget what you might read on any DMV website. My other is NY registered and they don't ask.

NY sled reggy used to be cheaper than VT. but now NY is at $45, so I may start reggying in VT. I live in NY, and ride in VT. If you ride in NY, you have to reggy in NY. If you ride in VT, any reggy will do. VT just wants there $120 VAST fee.
as far as trailers, register it up in Maine. Tell NJ and NY to go F-themselves. NO tax either. Maine will glady send you a trailer plate for 1/3 of the cost of NY.

End of the story: I registered the trailer in VT. No problems at all.
I registered the sleds in VT at Central VT Motorcycle (Ski Doo and Arctic Cat dealer). NO SALES TAX on sleds purchased out of state by non-resident of VT. Got my VAST pass there, too.
Next year, I'll register in NY and get a VAST pass and be able to ride in both states.
And I did take my insurance with Progressive.
Thanks to everyone for all the help. Now...how 'bout some damned SNOW! I did ride a little in Shrewsbury on Friday. The trails were actually quite good, but it was in the 40s, so I don't think they're still ok. Here's hoping the storm this week will be all snow and lots of it!
