and pics from www.islandpondvermont.com, looks like its going to be ruff getting out of the IP area. But, looks like Northern Orleans County has a bunch of snow.
Looks like Newport, Jay, Derby areas are nice. Whats it take mileage wise to get there?? Looks like it would be a nice ride. Anyone ever done this?? Ive rode the Norton/Canaan areas, and down near Burke/Lyndonville, but never travelled northwest toward Newport.....

Looks like 111 or something. I dont have a map in front of me, just the crappy map on vtvast.org

Could anyone help me with a good destination point, and/or approximate milage.

Any help would be appreciated.

I live in Ct also. We have a house in Morgan Vt which is half-way between Derby/Newport and Island Pond via route 111 by truck. Couple guys on here (degree and Arctic Rider) were up this past weekend. Marginal at best in Northeast Vermont areas like Island Pond, Norton. They said very little snow cover over rocks and such. Also keep in mind that most fields that happen to lead to the gas stations in Canaan and Norton are not rideable. Little bit of snow from this storm yesterday and little bit here and there this week predicted will help. Hope to get a ride in this weekend myself.

I think you'll find that the riding is marginal in the higher elevations with basically nothing in the lower valleys. No real way to get to gas. Might not be worth the trip.

From the IP trail reports:
Trail Report for Monday 12/27.04

Canaan reports that trails are open with good riding in the upper elevations but trails are bare coming into town.

Island Pond reports that trails are open with limited riding north of Island Pond, with icy spots. They have received an additions 3 – 4” of new snow and this has helped the marginal conditions leading into and out of Island Pond.

Please ride safe and ride to the right

Just got off the cell phone with two friends who are doing some late season grouse hunting from my camp. They did not "unload their machines". Lower areas Northeast out of Island Pond are "sparse" but frozen. Many "gullies". 8 to 14 inches above 1400 ft level, 3 to 4 inches of solid base, the rest is powder. There are riders out. In their words " a good dump" will make all of us well. I think they found my Crown Royal....decided to stay another night. I am up there this weekend. Will update.

went to the jay area on tuesday-thursday last week and left before the rain came. jay area has plenty of snow but they didnt groom much. just packed it with the groomer. we roamed too far from the jay area and it got thin fast and we were riding on rocks and dirt, this is before the rain. i will post pictures when i get home from work. we stayed at the jay village inn. its a real nice place and reasonable with a gas station across the street. pm me if u have any questions
