The 583 engine is probably one of the most bulletproof Doo engines ever built. Not the most powerful "600" class engine out there, but it can hold its own. I definately wouldn't hesitate buying a sled with one. 4500 miles is pretty low for a 583 as well.

Is it a Formula STX, or Formula Z? Or is it really a 1997 Formula 583? As there wasn't a 1996 Formula 583.

The 96 Formulas were in the F-2000 chassis, and had the C-7 rear skid, where the 1997 F583 was a S-2000 chassis with the SC-10 rear suspension.

That will depend on how the engine was cared for. I wouldn't think it would need a rebuild, but it would depend on a lot of things. I would do a compression check just to make sure. I know of a few people with 96 Formula Z's, STX's, 97 Formula Z's with over 10000 miles on them and they still run great.

Just be careful and look it over to see how it was taken care of. My brother bought one off ebay, and unfortunately, I couldn't go with him to pick it up. He brought it back, and spent the next month in the garage getting completly torn down and rebuilt from the frame up. We had everything that could come apart taken off that thing. It took about three of us 40 hours + to get it back into good shape. Skid had to be completely rebuilt, engine had to be rebuilt, clutches, etc etc... needless to say it wasn't worth the $1800 he paid for it. Look it over very carefully !!!!

how do u do a compression check
how much do u think to rebuld the motor

unscrew your plugs, screw in a comp. tester and pull it over. The engine rebuild kit was around $200.

I used to have a 1996 Ski-Doo Formula Z 583... had descent power, and was very reliable. Ended up selling for a S-2000 Chassis after this one, didn't like how it handle on the trails at all.

P.S.- Have you ever been in typing class?
stud4life
what should the compression be at?

My friend has a '97 FormulaZ 583.

I know the chassis changed from 96 to 97. His 97 seems real low (low handlebars) and is a good groomed trail sled. The backend would get a bit washy coming into corners under no gas. As for mogals, not great, the susp. is dated and fades big time. Engine wise, his has around 3,000miles and beat my F5 in about a quarter mile run. It would pull on the F5 from 35-60 and I couldn't make the sled length back in the top end cause they both go about 93mph.

I would buy one if in the market for a reliable used sled.

The 96 Formula Z and STX had the SC-10 btw

The STX had the falling rate SC10 while the FZ had the rising rate SC10

I own a 95 STX 583 and have close to 10,000miles(15,400kms) and compression should be 120-130psi

I am installing a 98 MXZ 670 SC 10 onto it this weekend buttrock.gif

Best thing to get is Flex skis :div20:

here is a pic of it last feb

IMO sounds like it needs a shock replacement :cn:

I have a 95 formula STX 583, bought in 1998 with 2800 miles. It now has 8,700 miles on it and still has 155psi a hole on compression tester. Thank goodness for the electric start.

When I first got it I had the carbs bored, UFO plates, trail ported, rotory plate, clutch kit, dyno port can and dropped a tooth on small gear.

I have always done through maintainence on it and and finally replaced the tract clips. The sled has always rock solid and will still remain in my stables.

It only has 7 inch suspension, and is a heavy piece compared to the newer sleds, but setup correctly will hold its on.

because of that sled I have been a loyal Doo'er.
