I'm confused on why you're confused!
You said both sites say it's Dec. 15th! Where are you getting the 20th from?
I don't ride in VT any more, but it's always been Dec. 15th "at the earliest". That means if there's enough snow and some trails may open later due to farmers or ???

The Season Begins Monday, December 20, 2004.
Think Snow!
This was cut and pasted from the VAST website. Im thinking December 20th is the opening day. Hunting season went alittle longer this year, thats why. It is usually the 15th though.
Also, just to muddy the waters alittle, It said at one point in time on the VAST site that opening day was December 25th!!!!!!!!

So here I was all bummed out because I can't ride the w/e before x-mas if there is snow when it hit me: trails open in New Hampshire on the 15th of December if there is enough snow!

I talked to Alexis Norwalk at VAST last friday and she told me the trails open on Dec. 20th because it is the law.
Last year the legislature updated the statute on snowmobiling. One of the things was to have a closed season. The lawmakers came up with" the Monday after the third Sunday" as the start of the season, hence the 20th of December.
The language was to prevent the snowmobile season from starting before muzzlloader hunting was over.
The only thing to worry about will be the cops writing tickets for snowmobiling in a closed season if the snow falls before the 20th

I must say you are wrong with this statement there is one other important issue to worry about. It's called trespassing and pissing of the landowner who allows to ride on there land during "ONLY the open snowmobiling season" :frech32:

Most of the folks around here have accepted the Opening Day of Snowmobile Season to be the Monday following muzzleloader season. I seriously doubt anyone that gave permission to snowmobile across their land will be upset at anyone traveling across the trail a week before the season "officially" opens.
My concern is the type of law enforcement that is the "letter of the law" variety. Some of us have experienced this in the Island Pond area of the Northeast Kindom.

It's the 20th. It has to do with how the hunting season falls and some new law. I forget exactly, but it's in the VAST news this month. Also the lake has frozen over. It was -7f there a couple of nights ago.

The trails are closed until the 20th unless you are working on the trails, signing etc. From what I've heard, there will not be law enforcement on the trails until the week after. Not a license to trespass, but they said that most cops will be flexible since there is so much confusion over the first day of the season. They are already looking at the new law because there can be weird years like this where the season won't open until almost a week after the "usual" openiing day of the 15th. People would go nuts if there is snow.
Also, everyone start blowing to the east, if the next storm goes 100 miles to the east, we could be looking at a foot of snow up here.
