My dad just bought a sled from a local dealer we never delt with before and he was very pleased with their way of dealing. I was just on their website and saw a 98 ZR500 forsale. It looks very clean from the picture. Has a crack just under the hood but i dont think its a biggie. The sled has 2500MI on it and is listed for $2750. Im going up right after school to see if they still have it and check it out, maybe talk to the guy about it. I gotta talk to my dad about trading mine in on it, I would only need to owe like at the most $200. but its getting my dad to do it which i dont think he will be too worried b/c he was very pleased. But ive seen a lot of posts on here and many of you have had this sled so im asking how did you guys like it. any flaws i should be aware of that i can address to my dad? Thanks, Mike. Heres a pic of the sled...

A little pricey for a 98 but a great sled if its been maintained. Its a well proven chassis still in use today. The engine was best in class for years and surprisingly fast. The aggressive clutching and high winding engine make it a terror in the trails but can't run with the big dogs in the wide open. Being a ZR, the shocks are all rebuildable and probably need it if its never been done. I don't think the skid of this era was coupled and is the only draw back I can think of. It causes some kick back in the bumps and inside ski lift in the turns. AD Biovin and Sno Pro makes a coupling kit that works great to resolve this for less than $100.

I have the 600 version, its a great sled! My buddy had the 500 and it was a fast sled, it could keep up with me no problem when they were both stock, id have about 2 sled lengths on him in a short drag race, but great power for a 500!! I know here in Canada those sleds are goin for 3200$ my friend just unloaded his pretty quick for 3000$ cause he bought a new F6, other then that he had no problems, and it always did well in the ice, and it was the winner of the 500 class in the grass drags!! Id say work on the price, but go for it!!!

sweet. Now i just have to talk to my dad about it, show him your replies and hope he says yes

I'm not sure if the 500's were affected by the same crank issues as the 98 600's but make sure there is no play in the crank, because I know several people that had 98 600 cranks grenade on them. Again I"m not sure if the 500's were affected, but its something that you should try and find out. Check to find out if all the updates (i'm assuming there's a few since thats almost always the case) have been done as well.

well I just got done talking to my dad about it and at 1st he kinda got pissed and said that we arnt getting rid of it but idk why but he changed his mind and said if its only a few hundred difference then we can get it(if its not a pos). well i didnt expect that from him but i got sort of excited but i dont wanna get my hopes up. What do you guys think they would give me for my sled. 99v-max 600dlx, immaculate cond. 6000MI.

why would you wanna get rid of your yammi for that cat?
yami is newer
yamaha dependability
triple sound, better mileage,less vibration,linear power,better handling,flatter cornering.
doesnt make sense to me?????????

its not suitable for my riding style. im more of the ditch bangin type
Fast 440
Look for a good used 2000-2002 ZR 500 or 500efi. It had the newer body style and wider ski stance. you will like it much better!

P.S. the powervalve carb 500 either 2001 or 2002 is a wicked fast sled!

A good used 2000 or 2001 ZR 440 SnoPro would be a good choice also if you like to work on them a little more.

i guess they are stealing the sleds early.

1998 ZR 500 was a great sled 90-95mph, good gas mileage and very dependable. My buddy's dad just sold a 98 ZL 500 that was my dads first with 1500 miles and flawless for $1800. Trading what you have for lower miles is your choice. The ride and handeling will be better with minimal performance gains. $2700 no way. Sleds are starting to pop up cheap as most people are picking up their spring orderes. Your choice, but I would wait it out and keep looking.

Any zr or Fcat would be good for you to get.....all can be made into rockets...and dicth bangin on the ole zr, nothing beats it!....GO GET ONE!

I know where you can get a 99 ZL 440 liquid cooled with around 1500 miles on it and it is mint  . Women owned and driven very little. She just bought a sled with electric start and reverse. I'm thinking around $2000.+or-? If your interested I can ask for sure. We are in NE NY on the canadian border and Lake Champlain. Let me know if your interested? The ZL is just a tic softer in the springs. Not sure but you sound young and prob light? The ZL may be a good buy for you? Same skid as the ZR and the LC 440 makes around 80hp I believe. :div20:

:fluffy: ylsuper.gif
FreezerBurnt
the ZL 440 only makes 68hp
98 Thundercat
That 98 ZR 500 was over priced anyway. My buddy picked up a 99 ZR 600 2 years ago with 2k miles mint condition for $2,800.00
woracing12
i bought 1 a week ago. 01 zr500, bar raisers, bar hook, clutch kit, silencer for $2700. 3k miles
ronfl
ylsuper.gif The ZL I was talking about was a LC not the fan cooled 440. I thought the LC produced a bit more than 68 hp but I could be wrong!

Well this should stir up the issue!

I'm thinkin' I'm going to sell my '02 ZR500 Cross Country...I would like $3K for it. Nice sled, it has about 1,800 miles on it. All green with the usual Cross Country stuff, 96 studs, moto-X handlebars with hand protectors (work great!), mountain cat skis (the old GOOD ones) and some freaky stickers. Shocks rebuilt last season too.

It looks and rides like the ditch banger it is! Actually better than my 800 CC but I'm used to acceleration like T-Cats and 800cc's +++.

I bought it for my (ex) girlfriend and now, obviously, no longer need it. The next one can get her own!!! Lesson learned...again! :banghead:

If you are interested e-mail me at artgb@netcsd.com. I should have it in Auto Trader before the end of the week.

BTW, I'm located near Detroit.

The ZL is liquid 440 piston port with 68hp

The Z is a fan 440 with 52hp

The ZR 440 case reed about 90hp

BTW these are Cat own #s :div20:
Roost 'Er
52hp- is it dual carb + reed valve

I have for sale a '00 ZR600 LE w/ reverse that is nearly in showroom condition. It has 2400 miles on it w/ 1200 on the new from Arctic Cat engine. I'm asking $3300 for it but would consider reasonable offers. It's in the classifieds but lemme know if you want more info. Lots of extras included.
