I would stay in upper michigan maybe near bruce crossing or farther north if you want better snow that week is 50/50 for getting decent snow.

agreed but it's best to not mess around and just go straight to houghton, after last year i'm sold on that area pretty much any time of year. It's only an extra 2-3 hour drive and the super 8 is cheap through priceline.com and alsot he budget host is descent at a super low cost.
although i must admit hayward was surprisingly nice if you ride before new years eve. we were in houghton over xmas and hayward over new years and both were. good. snow was THIN in hayward but little to no trafic.

I normally ride around sayner/st. germain area. Out of 20 years maybe 2 have been real bad where you could not ride.

Your right, i would just go to Houghton, it is not that much farther north and the trails should are normally better.

I have been staying betwen eagle river and phelps for the last 12 years and I would say the New Years week is normally 50/50 or decent snow.

that area gets pounded. Biggest thing is to stay of main trails as much as possible.

Eagle River. Puts you in a great location for a central hub to any where. If you need I can recommend a excellent place to stay that is very sled friendly and reasonably priced.

I would pick a diffrent weekend all together. It gets really crazy between christmas and new years. But if you go that weekend I would stay east of eagle river, less traffic good trails.

I would stay at the Hiawatha Motor Inn in eagle river. Right on the trail, and great owners!

Just call up 3x and stay with him ... they always find a way to ride (firelanes if all else fails) & then to end at the P&G is a good way to end the day.
