Rob I'm getting my first digital camera....Canon's new G6. I have never had a digital camera before and I was wondering if you could provide some quick easy tips for taking great pictures in the winter with a digital. With regular film my winter shots suck...always white out. I never seem to get the any texture or depth of snow.
Thanks.

one of the most important things for snow pics is to get the proper exposure. Snow pics (and beach pictures too) often fool the camera's metering system because the scene is so bright. Many cams have a special "snow" program, check your owners manual. If no special program then you can do the same thing by adjusting 'exposure compansation' to +1 or so. That will keep your pics from looking too dark and having "gray" snow. But snow itself is tough to 'show texture'. Best way to do that is concentrate on getting pics early and late in the day when shadows are longest. Midday snow shots will look flat because of the overhead lighting. The last hour of sunlight is the best, try to take lots of pictures then. Other than that, just normal stuff like good compostion, getting close to your subject, etc. And keeping your cam close at hand for those 'action' shots that just crop up. Be ready to do a "quick-draw" for a great shot of a groomer, moose, or your buddy stuck in a snowbank. And the more you use it the better you will get. That's one of the best things about digital..no film wasted on shots that don't come out. If one out of 10 pics is a "keeper", you're doing good! :div20:
