The storm has passed and left us with about half of what the NWS predicted. We have 5-8" of good quality snow which is just fine with me. Removing 10-16" of heavy snow moved by 30-40mph winds on our property would be a huge task.
Dick and I took a brief ride this evening and found some fun riding both on forest roads and ungroomed trails. Lots of loose snow and many forest roads waiting for riders. We will hit them tomorrow morning hopefully before others do. We saw the groomer working TR31 towards Bayfield and they should have the system covered by Friday morning, assuming no breakdowns.
The majority of the trails have a 5-8" solid base so the fresh snow will add to that. Same with the forest roads. Some trails had bare spots on exposed sunny slopes and heavily traveled corners that will be covered but will not hold up to a lot of traffic. Watch for those areas. We encountered some hefty drifts on a couple of forest roads so they are out there in the exposed areas.
Temps will be moderating starting Friday but it will get down to -15 tonight. Highs in the low 40's are expected by Sunday and will extend into next week. I will keep everyone informed of conditions at that time. Our area is one of few that can offer quality riding. I know a lot of the UP is toast as are places south of here. We were right on the edge of the snow/rain line and most of the good snow fell in Minnesota.
