I was riding up in watersmeet in early feb, and we decided to ride out and see what all the fuss was about.... Looks like headlights and tail lights off the highway to me, but the locals sure seem to think its some weird unexplained phenom.... have you seen them and what do you think?

found this on google.

The Story...
At one time, Ripley's Believe It Or Not offered in excess of $100,000 to the person or persons who could solve a bizarre light phenomenon in Paulding, Michigan.

Nearly every clear evening, strange circular spheres of light dance on the horizon of the tiny community, and at one point seem to follow the pathway of electrical lines.

The lights have been captured on film by Michigan Magazine and Channel Six News out of Marquette. Experts from Ripley's have been to the location to examine the phenomenon.

At the location of the Paulding lights, the Michigan Forest service has put up signs which indicate the best area from which the lights can be seen. So far, no logical conclusions have been reached. The lights have been witnessed as being red, white and green. These lights are not to be confused with the Northern Lights. They are a phenomenon that is unique to Paulding, Michigan.

Locals say the lights have been viewed for a long time. Eye witnesses claim to have seen the lights way back at the turn of the century, while on their way to the train depot at Watersmeet.

Various legends have developed concerning the lights. One myth explains the lights as the ghost of a railroad brakeman, while other say it is the ghost of an Indian dancing on the power lines. Some locals attest to the fact that the lights start over Lake Superior and make their way inland. The public is welcome to view the strange lights

We used to party our asses off up there in High School...

its the old man's lantern light from falling off the caboose of the old train tracks, he's still looking for the train.

I read somwhere that it was headlights (www.johndee.com?). The article was long and seemed to prove without a doubt it was the highway. Some friends have seen it and say that it is not the road. I drive by 15 times per winter, but have never stopped

i rode there by sled with 3 others and we all agree that it looks like lights from the highway maybe 5 or 6 miles away...... but, I've been wrong before. frantics.gif escape.gif hyper.gif

MY DAD USED TO DRIVE LOG TRUCK. HE SAID THEY WOULD GO THROUGH THERE AT 2 IN THE MORNING IN THE MIDDLE OF FEBUARY AND YOU WOULD SEE IT (THERE IS OLNY ONE LIGHT) HE SAID THEY WOULD PARK THERE WITH THEIR TRUCKS RUNNING WITH THE LIGHTS OFF AND IT WOULD COME ABOUT 20 FEET FROM THE TRUCKS. HE SAID THE FUNNY PART WAS IT AS BRIGHT AS A CAR HEADLIGHT BUT IT DOSENT ILLUMINATE ANYTHING. IF YOU WANT THE LIGHT TO CAME CLOSE YOU HAVE TO BE QUIET AND NOT TALK. I WENT AND SEEN IT TO.

The road is paralell to the highway a couple miles away it would be hard to see the road thru the trees.

I've seen it green, yellow, red..split off into 3 lights coming at you. It has to be something similiar to the Northern light magnetic event.

I've seen it also. Just a weird thing. Worth a stop if your in the area. Not worth going out of your way to see it.

Then how come it comes within 30-40 feet awy from the baracade? Did you go on a busy weekend that it could be car lights or did you go when there was no one else there. The only time it creeped me out when I was there on a tuesday night in November with 5 people that sat still and were quiet.

It seems like car lights to me when there were people there. If you look closely at the map Robins pond road is parelell to Hwy 45 so I am not sure if you could ee the highway thru the woods. It was convincing that it was something else to me when we went ther in November. The weird thing is when you drive home from there all car lights move around like it. I do not know if it is because of seeing a moving light?

my dad said that it came past the barricade and was almost to the road that turns left on the grade 50 yards before the barricade.

Some of the guys I work with up here have been in the area their entire lives (any where from 42-55) and they bought into the head/tail light theory at first but when they had been there when there would be no traffic lights were still there years ago. And they have been like this for at least 55 years-back when there wasn't traffic up here. I buy into the northern lights theory for them. They had also mentioned when you walk towards them they go away but when back at parking area they come back. Interesting either way though.
