Hey......

Me and my wife just moved here from Newfoundland, and we are wondering what the ski-dooing is like here......as we are huge snowmobilers? I have asked alot of people I know here and they say I will have to drive a long distance to get a run (I live in the Halifax area), but none of them are snowmobilers, so they don't really know.

When can you usually get on your sleds for the year (usually lat dec.-early jan. home)?

Any info would get great......I can't wait to see what it is like up here.

:beerchug:
Doo-Rider
We usually go up to the lake in december (mid) and burn all the summer storage crap out of our sleds, and that way we know if anything is going to go wrong, or if it fouls a plug it don't matter. Sledding usually starts late dec. early Jan. like you said. About an hour or 1.5 from halifax will get you to where I go. It's about 1/2 hour from Truro where I live to go sledding. Not too far at all. We can leave from 10 mins. away, but it's not as good going.

We went right into April last year, with the blizzard and all.

Go to the "Top Site List" found at the top of every page, look at the Snowmobile Association of Nova Scotia. There you will find where the main riding areas are, a list of clubs in those areas to join, and some of the snowmobile friendly businesses that help support out sport. There is lots of information to help you learn about snowmbiling in Nova Scotia. Good Luck, maybe we will meet on the trail or perhaps a HCS trip could be put together sometime.

Hey, there's an idea. ylsuper.gif

Thanks for the info guys.....looking forward to hitting the trails up here. I know that there are alot of groomed trials here also.....are there many other areas to play in besides the trails. I like a bit of hill climbing now and then.

I HCS ride would definitely be cool......good way to meet a few sledders also.
ns503
If you like off-trail and hill climbing stuff, you might want to check out the Cape Breton Highlands. Basically there's 3 areas here - the Annapolis Valley & surrounding (never sledded there), the Northern region (from NB border to Antigonish/Guysborough), and Cape Breton. I don't think there are trail connections between them, someone correct me if I'm wrong. (Pretty sure you can't sled across the causeway, but you might be able to hook up with someone that would truck you across). Make sure you go check out the SANS site like SM suggested, that'll get you started, and try to find a club to join. My main club is Cumberland, located in Collingwood in the heart of mainland snow country (closest to my home). Also belong to another. You might get some feedback on clubs at a local dealer, not sure how they are around the city. What part of Nfld are you here from? I've got relatives scattered around over there, but haven't made a sled trip there yet. That's on my 'do in this lifetime' list.
Welcome, hope you enjoy your stay. :beerchug:

A HCS trip would be nice. There is at least 7 of us now that ride the same trials.
Weiner127
Count me in on that trip! ylsuper.gif with the shitty weather this summer has brought surely the winter can only get better. Nice to have a transplanted Newfie on board, hope to spot you in our neck of the woods sometime, check our clubs website fro info.

I'm from Petty Hr. , about 30 minutes from St. John's. Have to say the rock is a great place for the sleds.....especially on the west coast, around Gros Morne area. We usually make a trip out there every year and it is sledders heaven. But in and around St. John's it is hot or miss with the snow.

Looking forward to seeing what ya guys have to offer up here. Would be awesome to hook up for a run some time and get to know some of the places to go.

I have been on many of the clubs sites around NS, hard to which are good and which are not, if your not from here, but I'm sure I will find out as soon as the snow hits. I was on the Dalhousie site the other day.....I hear it is a great place for sleddin'.

Hope we have a few of those snow storms like you had last year.

Hey Wayne, the site is looking good ! I hope you are happy with the hosting! Any of you other clubs in N.S. interested let me know and check out my company site ePARK webhosting and webdesign.
Weiner127
Thanks Troy, everything is great. Hard to get anything to report on this time of the year though although the dealers here have alot of there new sleds in stock now but still in crates. One local dealer, Adventure Motors, has become a Sno-Hawk dealer and have 3 new 600HO Sno-Hawks in stock now, can't wait to test one of those out, should be a blast!

To anyone wanting to fire up a website for their I highly recommend e-park. Very reasonable and extremely reliable hosting and MAritime based as well.

Hey boys it would be good to get a ride this winter, for Green meanie and
Snow devil sled with us and you can sled across the North side of the causeway
most winter between late Jan to early April ....the south would be water skipping
cause it don`t freeze.......
Cape Breton Stock.......P.S. we are located right in Hawkesbury
flag_canada.gif flag_usa.gif
chafe
Speaking of water skipping......is that a popular thing up here. We used to do a bit of it at home and it is quite the rush......as long as you make it across. cold.gif

That makes two of us from Truro.

SM or ns503 get my vote for planning a ride! They likely have more experience than me, being 19 and all. But I'll be 20 by sledd'n season, so maybe I could handle it frech11.gif

How does Sutherlands lake sound? A centre spot for a lot of us. with a club house and parking.

Just a suggestion, I'll leave from almost anywhere's :beerchug:
MONSTER1160
Sounds Good, keep the posts going, sleding still 4 months away flag_canada.gif

smclelan, I know you are listening..................

Count me in, and I know I can round up a few more! Never sledded up that way yet, but have been wanting to.

chafe
I would love to tag along and see what NS sledding is all about.
Doo-Rider
We got time to plan a good trip! Even if no one wants to organize it we can always just meet at a certain place and do the tri-county rally that is over 100 miles I think, nice trails.

I'd really like someone with more experience to do it over me though..........

It certianly is good of you to volunteer me for the organizing of this trip. I am also only 19 years old just that I am trapped inside a 41 year old body. I however, will still be 19 come sledd'n season.
I think we could get something put together if there is enough interest. I think Folly Club would be a good start piont where it is extremely easy to find right on the highway and all, but I am open for any ideas.

flag_canada.gif
ns503
Hey, sounding good. Wouldn't be too hard just to say 'lets meet here on a given day at a given time', Folly or Sutherlands sounds good as any, Folly would be easiest to get to for anybody from too far away. Geez, I'll have 60 miles on before the ride starts.
When the time gets close we should make it known on the main board so any HCS'rs that could come can come. Should be a blast.

Back to your original question on distance.

1.5 hours puts you in Foley Lake or New Glasgow Area
2.0 hours puts you in Antigonish area
3.5 puts you at the base of the CB highlands

All are good sledding areas, all have areas to drive into and start from, and all have active clubs and well maintained trails.

Welcome to NS. :div20:
Doo-Rider
Sorry for volunteering you guys, but I know you'd be better at it than me. I didn't even think of Folly, and that's where we unload 90% of the time. We usually travel in a group of three, but I'm not usually the one who knows where he is going. GPS helps me know.

We would have to visit our friendly laddy @ Collingwood, right? lol
Doo-Rider
ns503, I can look after getting people from the Folly club house over to Sutherland's lake. That isn't a problem.

This should be a good trip!

Thanks for the info......not as far as I thought I would have to go to get some sleddin' in. Same as home....would almost have to drive 1-2 hours before it was really good.

Looking forward to getting out for a ride.

Do you guys sled with your girlfriends/wives etc., or is it usually just the boys? My wife has a MXZ 380f and she is addicted to the sport also. But it is always fun to just get out with da' boys every now and then also.
smclelan
I would say things are no different here than from where you came from, but I noticed you said you were from Newfoundland. :smilielol: Trips here are what you plan; a trip with the boys or couples trip. However if the Bride is a driver and can travel along with the boys she could certianly join in.

flag_canada.gif
Doo-Rider
I'm not fussy, anyone can join us.

We could make the trip stop by a resturant too maybe?

How many miles (or KM's) do you guys normally call a "trip?" 100 miles? 200 miles? We usually do between 100 and 200, but whatever you have in mind is fine with me.
chafe
A trip to me is a full day of sleddin'. Usually between 100-200 km's, depending on how much "play-time" we have along the way (hillclimbing, watersports, etc). It's just a good time to get out for a full day on the sleds.
Doo-Rider
Sounds good to me.

Now that I'm use to my sled (or sledding in general) I like to venture off the trails more and have fun.

I know it's a fair ways off yet, but what time generally do you hit the trails? I know on a Saturday they tend to get beat up later on in the day from heavy traffic. They are freshly groomed Friday night I believe.
Thumper-2
Count me in :div20: !!! I'm fromTruro also ! HCS run for 100 miles or so ....no problem !Depens on the day and time of year for me ...... :augen41:
Doo-Rider
A Saturday would be nice for me. I am gaurenteed Saturday's off all year around.

How About everyone else?
Weiner127
How far would a loop from Sutherland's or Folley to North Shore and back be? 150-200km is a decent Saturday ride for us. Or maybe Folley to Tatamagouche, eat at Big Al's and head back. Lots of options if ya get a good day. I can't really believe I'm discussing this when my boat is still in the water and I'm swimming at the beach, lol

Depending on which trails you take you could make a trip from Folly to Big Als be around 140 miles. We left there last year (Folly) and went to sutherlands and then on to the railbed into tatamagouche and back on the railbed and it was around 140 miles. We could make a nice loop if we went the railbed and came back through the Dalhousie mountain trails ( McIntosh Lake area), then through Nutby and back to Folly. I dont know though that sounds like 200 miles or more maybe? I have gone in both areas but not in the same trip. Doesnt matter to me i will go no matter were you decided to go!

Some nice pics and some very nice sleds. You guys had snow earlier than we did at home (St. John's area). Can't wait for the temperature to drop.

Saturday and/or Sunday are good for me.

Here's some pics of a trip we made to the West Coast of NL last March.......Heaven

Hope these links work.

Doo-Rider
Is your sled the black MXZ?

The highlands have snow before anywhere's I think, and it last into late april, maybe early may? It's about a 3 or 4 hour drive I think, closer to the city I think than where I live.

What do you guys consider early? Better plan it when the season is well under way, that way the trails will be is top condition. Depends on how the snow comes, and when I guess.

That's my sled....here's a better pic

As far as Snowmobile bars go, you'd be better off asking a Jamaican :augen41:

Moto X I could help you maybe, but not sleds.

What do you want? more of an upright bar?
chafe
Not really sure what I want yet.....mine have a slight bend in them (rough landing). I might just get the same type that is on it now.

Hey Chafe,
I see that you are new to Nova Scotia and looking for some place to do some sledding. I live just outside Halifax on the South Shore. I do all my sleddin' in the Annapolis Valley. My parents live in New Ross (about 45mins to 1hr drive) and I go there and leave their place and head into the Valley. The groomed trail is right in back of their home. Our club down there maintains about 500kms of trail. There is lots of good snowmobling in that area and I would be more than welcome to take you and anyone else out for a ride on these trails. THINK SNOW!!! flag_canada.gif flag_canada.gif

xcjenn......that sounds great....it's nice to go with people who know the different areas and where (and where not) to go. I can't wait to get the sleds out on the snow again......all I think about is snow......my non-sleddin' buddies think I am nuts, but they don't understand.

Sounds great.

Whenever the trails are in top shape we'll go. I'm thinking Feb. but who knows maybe we will get an early winter. We go on trips long before that, but when we have people coming in from any distance I'd like the trails top be in their best shape. You know to make there trip the best it can be.
