Full Version: Dial-a-jet vs. Tempa flow

I've been looking at the various carb compensators on the market. I'm down to the dial-a-jet dually, and the Holtzman Tempa Flow. They both seem to be about the same, is there a big difference, or will the dually work better with the 40 carbs? BTW, I have no concern about elevation changes, so I don't need/want the ATACC. Thanks.

I have run both and will never go back to dial a jet. It works but tempa flow works better. Set it and forget it. If you use dial a jet you better have egt and be prepared to adjust them. Tempa flow is automatic

Both products accomplish the same thing: jetting your sled for conditions (temp and altitude). Tempa flow is less demanding on the user. Once installed properly it constantly is compensating for temperature changes. You, the operator, don't have to do a thing.

The Dial a Jets do essentially the same thing. There are 5 settings on a "dial" that permit [U] YOU, the operator to dial in for the conditions of the day. This is a hassle, if you are lazy, it is real cold, it is late at night, etc.. There are two potential benefits to the Dial a Jets. You can start with a leaner base curve ( you remove your OEM installed mains and jet for 40F). You then richen by tweaking your dial to a richer position as temperatures drop. You should, at full rich position, be good to minus 40F. You can push the edge a little, specially if you have EGTs, and get increidible gas mileage.

Secondly, the dial a jets dump in more atomized fuel on demand (the process is load related) so when you are really on the hammer you may be able to be a little leaner than would seem prudent, with the resultant performance benefit, and skirt the burn-down zone a little closer.

I've run the Dial a Jets on sleds for years. Still have them on my 2000, 800XCR blasto machine. On my trail sleds I run the Holtzman Vari-Flow, which operates on the same principal as the Tempa-Flow, except it is operator tunable. The vari-flow has one dial, mounted on the top of my airbox on my 800 Touring. I have one on my wife's 600 Classic. It's real easy to reach. To change the setting on the dually Dial a Jets, you have to open the hood up, get out your screwdriver, and contort yourself to get the screw driver into the two dials which you mount on the carb bodies. At nite, you throw a flashlight into the mix. Oh yeah, your gloves are off.

With the Tempa Flow, you just ride.
