DNR says deer run down

TOWN OF LIND - A farm field in the town of Lind in Waupaca county turned into a killing field.
"It was obvious snowmobilers were running them down from behind," said Randal Yorkson, who farms the property along a snowmobile trail in Waupaca County, near County Highway EE. On Saturday morning, his son found several dead deer.
"One, after it was on the ground, looked like snowmobilers parked on top of it and just gunned the snowmobile and tore the stomach right open of the deer," Yorkson said.
The Department of Natural Resources is investigating the case.
"It appears to me they were going around and rounding them up and trying to push them toward the center to make it easier," said warden Ted Dremel.
"Many of them had broken legs, hair and what not was missing off the deer. You could see where snowmobile tracks drove right over the top of them," Dremel said.
The warden said three deer were dead in the field, a fourth was alive but had broken legs so he euthanized it. A fifth deer was found several hours later dead, tied to tree. Dremel said the deer was likely tied to the tree while it was still alive.
"We believe they dragged it from that field and tied it to this tree," Dremel said. "Absolutely needless."
The woman who owns the property is so upset about what happened that has temporarily shut down the snowmobile trail.
"I really couldn't believe that someone could be so malicious to animals," said Virginia Niemuth. "They were maliciously run over and dragged by the snowmobiles. They were skinned alive you might say."
Niemuth said she will re-open the trail, but only after the people responsible for this are captured. "They need a trail but when things like this happen you can't keep it open," Niemuth said.
The president of the County Line Trail Blazers snowmobile club is also angry about what happened. Stuart McIntyre said about five miles of a major trail are now closed. "Unfortunately it just takes a couple individuals to ruin it for everybody," McIntyre said.
Snowmobilers are not blaming the property owner, they blame whoever used the trail to slaughter five deer.
If you have any information about the incident you're urged to call the Department of Natural Resources at 1-800-TIP-WDNR. Callers can remain anonymous.
The County Line Trail Blazers and Waupaca County Snowmobile Association are both offering rewards in the case. Right now the reward totals $3,000.

I dont recall reading this but the news said she will not OPEN the trail until the people who did this turn themselves in or are found!!!
No wonder why snowmobiling gets a bad rap.. Honestly how stupid

Now thanks to these jack@$$es (which is putting it lightly) the rest of us snowmobilers: a) lose what sounds like a major trail, and b) guess what the general public who don't own snowmobiles thinks of us. And that is before you get into the bigger issue of animal cruelity. Completely and utterly frustrating to say the least.

That was on the local news here in Green Bay
Honestly i am speechless - WHY ??? What enjoyment would come out of this
How does this go on without any witnesses ??? To doo all that damage , you would think took sime time - Someone had to have seen something - Damaged sleds
Daytime ? Nightime ?
This state has enough of a blackeye with sledding and drinking and how many deaths this year
Makes me sick to my stomach - Man i hope someone comes forward !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just watched it on the local channel 2 news - Was one of the top stories at 10pm
One of the things that stood out at the end
DNR said - "Other land owners are catching wind of this and thinking about closing down there trails also" something along those lines
Not good - Not good at all

WTF?!?!?!?
I don't blame any landowner for doing what she did, in fact, I don't know if I would ever trust a snowmobiler if I was her.
Someone has to know something about this. This is a criminal matter. What if someone did that with any motorized vehicle?
Apparently, there is more than one snowmobile involved and the DNR/Cops should be able to at least check the tracks and determine what type of track was used to do the damage. Also if one deer was tied to a tree there must be footprints somewhere. I would never imagine someone even thinking of doing this.

I sure hope who ever did this get caught and punshied to the fullest extent of the law. Who ever did it has no respect for there sled, the trail system or animals. If it was a group of people some one will talk $3000 is alot of money to someone who is broke.

That is absolutely brutal... Breaking deers legs and running them over until they die??? WTF is wrong with some people.
I cant even imagine the mindset of someone tying a deer with broken legs to a tree just for kicks.

Folks, in order to save our trail systems, we need to take it upon ourselves to police the trails when we are out there. We cannot rely on local law enforcement to do it. If you see someone doing something that they aren't supposed too, all you need is their registration number. You don't even have to confront them ( that would be hard for me to do). Just get the registration number and call it in.
The main problem where I ride is people riding off of the trails. I see evidence of this all the time and we are losing trails because of it. I only hope it is the farmer's kid out riding around in the fields, but I highly doubt it. When you see crap like this, get a registration number. What you may be saving, is the trail you ride on.
We have a few individuals that are going to bring this sport down unless we work together to stop it.

yeah. before law enforcement officials get these guys, they should be tied to a groomer and paraded around, allowing anyone with a valid snowmobile registration to smack them across the face with a shaper bar, so everyone can see that the snowmobile community is just as disgusted by them as any other group.
i hope they run their mouth in a bar somewhere and they all end up in comas, or better....laying in a snowbank somewhere in the same condition that they left the deer in.
can't wait to here from PETA on this

We should all help run that reward up. Send 5 bucks if you can. I did. Lets see that reward get to 7 or 8K. Someone will talk.
I hope they lose every privelidge with regards to the DNR forever. NO hunting, no fishing, no boating, no atv, no sledding..nothing. Forever.
Someone suggested writing a letter to the landowner expressing how the real snowmobiling community feels. If it can be done digitally, I'll sign it in a second. I can't express how sorry that I am that these idiots did this.
Should have a real bloody sled with a lot of hair on it. Not easy to clean too. Hope everyone keeps an eye and an ear out for this pricks. Once their names come out and their addresses get posted, let's see how good they sleep.
Probably done at night I would think, too much risk for someone to come along during the day and be able to identify them.

More tidbits of info I have heard and seen if not everybody has: The landowner is a 80 year old woman who was a life long snowmobiler. There were reports of people hearing snowmobiles in this area around 3:30 Saturday morning (nothing ever good happens at this time). WBAY ch. 2 of Green Bay just did their coverage and they went to one of the clubs in Waupaca County and basicly reported on if anyone wants to catch these people it is us snowmobilers and the snowmobile clubs of the county were "mad as hell" and they did a very good job reporting all the work club members put into the trails. A very good report telling the general public how the rest of us feel IMO.

Didn't hear that. That just makes it worse. At first I thought it was likely some dumb young kids. 3:30 in the morning? If it was kids the parents should be charged too. If I saw that shit out in the field in front of my house there would be some loud bright flashes commin' from my window And it wouldn't be firecrackers!!! WAUSAU, Wis. A group of snowmobilers in central Wisconsin herded and killed four deer and severely injured a fifth in what a warden today called a senseless act of cruelty.
No arrests have been made in the Saturday morning incident about five miles south of Waupaca, said Ted Dremel, a state Department of Natural Resources warden.
There's talk of closing all snowmobile trails in Waupaca County until the "rogue snowmobilers" are caught, he said.
"It is senseless. I don't know how else to describe it," Dremel said. "It is probably something they thought was fun or humorous at the time. They did purposely run over these deer. The tracks in the snow were in a circular manner, almost looking like they were chasing the deer back to other snowmobile partners."
Randy Yorkson, who farms the land, said people cannot believe what happened.
"I am going to guess it is somebody who left a bar. They probably had been using that trail before, knowing the deer were out there," he said. "This is just some yahoos who don't have any common sense."
Landowner Virginia Niemuth, 80, immediately shut off access to her property, closing five miles of the main snowmobile trail across Waupaca County.
"There's sick people out there," Niemuth said. "I used to love to snowmobile, but this is too much."
Dremel believes three or four snowmobiles were involved in a roundup of deer in a moonlit alfalfa field where 30 to 40 animals were known to feed. Witnesses reported
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Advertisement
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
hearing snowmobiles in the area about 3:30 a.m., he said.
Three deer were found dead in the field. A snowmobile stopped atop one and ripped open its stomach, Dremel said. A fourth deer with broken legs was euthanized.
The fifth deer was dragged from the field and tied to a tree about 25 feet from a road. Investigators think someone may have planned to return for that deer, Dremel said.
"It looked like the deer wrapped itself around the tree and choked itself to death," he said.
Dremel said he has never heard of this kind of "cowboy-style" attack on deer with snowmobiles.
"Usually, it is an accident a deer standing in a trail and a snowmobiler can't avoid it," he said.
The dead deer included two bucks and three does. One was a fawn.
Investigators have no suspects. Six snowmobile clubs have offered a combined $7,500 for information leading to arrests, Dremel said. The Waupaca County Crime Stoppers and Fox Valley Humane Association in Appleton also have offered rewards totaling $1,500.
Investigators have received some leads but none from a witness or someone who talked to anyone involved, Dremel said.
Information can be phoned into the DNR's tip line at 1-800-TIP-WDNR.
"This is not characteristic of the snowmobile community in Wisconsin," DNR Chief Warden Randy Stark said in Madison. "Obviously, we are looking to get any public assistance we can in identifying who is responsible for this."

I posted my contribution to the reward fund, I challenge everyuone to also contribute. Snowmobilers need to make sure that this does not go away quietly. I am sure the AWSC will make sure this effort gets publicity to make sure that everyone who snowmobiles is not like this.
There is nothing you can do to these people that could ever equal what they did.
