thanks for any answers.

I know a guy in Sydney Cape Breton that does them for $20.00. I will PM you his contact information if you wish.
Calibration is done by drilling a hole in the back of the tach to access a adj screw. The tach is hooked to a machine and set to a specific RPM. The needle on the tach is then adjusted to agree to the machine, or whatever position you want it to.
This usually causes the tach to be out at rpm's other than what the tach is calibrated at. Therefore, whoever calibrates the tach for you should also tell you the RPM the tach shows for 3400-5000(depending on CC of sled) so you can nail down your engagement RPM better as well.

Why can't polaris calibrate them from the factory

That is a very good question. I don't know that one either. I think that Arctic Cat must do so, because on the 2 Cats that I checked with a borrowed calibration tool, the tachs were dead on. On my 2001 XC800, there is a hole already there for adjusting the calibration of the tachometer. But on my brother's 2002 XC800s, the hole is filled in on the back of the tach. Having the tach calibrated is a good idea for clutch tuning. They can be as many as 500 rpm off. My brothers was 450 off. Makes a whole lot of difference when you are shooting for a certain rpm.

I believe its a cost issue. The tachs are set up to be generally accurate thru a wide range of RPM's.
Different engines have different HP/torque curves. It would be expensive for polaris to calibrate each tach for each different engine it produces.
Many late model tach's from polaris have shown to be over by approx 200rpm at 8000K. In other words, if your tach is reading 8K RPM, chances are your engine is actually going 7800RPM.

I calibrated my '03 ProX last year, it was about 375-400 rpm fast.

These sleds are expensive too!

Polaris orders a whole bunch of tachs from their supplier and installs them as they go. The supplier should be responsible for proper calibration.
FWIW, my '04 ProX was dead-on at 8000 RPM.

tach's need to be calibrated almost yearly,a race pack can do the same job.We have race packs on all our sleds and calibrate the tach's to it.or take it to a dealer that no's how,it's worth the money.

Zeke I calibrate tachs. Most tachs are very close but there are a few that are off. The new 6 pulse Polaris Tach i put on my race sled read 200 RPM slow which with my motor makes a big difference. I am in Coon Rapids, MN.
I will calibrate for $ 15.00 plus shipping. Riley

If you have a laptop computer you can calibrate your tach yourself. Go the website I have listed below and download the Tone Generator. You can set the frequency to 800.00 hrz and make sure it is set on sine wave and that will calibrate your tach to 8000 rpms. 780.00 hrz for 7800 rpms. Get a plug with wire and plug it into your headphone jack on the laptop and take 2 wires to connect to your tach. It works.

hey maydaze, thanks for the info on the calibrating, all you have to do is get the software and a wire to plug into your headphone jack for this to work? When i hook up the wires will the take read 8000 if it is on 800hrz? how do you adjust the tach? Seems pretty cool because i have a laptop

ProX16 some tachs aren't adjustable. On the ones that aren't adjustable you just need to keep in mind what your tach reads at the rpm you want. Riley

Riley, how do I know if it is adjustable or not, i heard something about drilling a whole in the back of the tach to adjust it. I have a 2003 Prox600 ... anyone know if this is an adjustable tach...

I would highly suggest not drilling the tach on your sled. Nickels and I found out the hard way after we tried it on his. My 2001 XC 800 had the hole to access the adjustment screw on its tach. My brothers 02 XC 800s did not have the same hole. We drilled the tachs on those sleds and found the adjustment screw underneath. Last season, Nickels and I tried the same thing on his. We ended up having to get a new tach for his sled. He has a 2003 Pro-X 700. Just find out what the tach reads at the rpm range you want, and shoot for that number. Put a thin piece of tape over the range you want to make it easier to see when you hit that number.

I can't get this to work. I hooked up the wires to the tach and nothing happens. I took the tach out of the sled and hooked up the red wire and white wire from my computer and nothing. What am I doing wrong?

This is how I was told to do it. Use the same tone genr and laptop. Get a headpone output wire with standard rca pin jack for left/right stero sound on the other end. You then need a stereo system with a aux input to plug the rca left right jacks into. Take the speaker output wire {Iwas told use either left or right and leave the other just unhooked} and hook it to the tach input and tach ground. Then start the tone gen for the frequency you want and check for proper rpm. Also don't turn your tach to have the rpm you want straight up. keep it in factory position. I have not done this yet, been it's how Ive been told and how I will try this fall. rd.

I'll bring my laptop and my old stereo to do tach calibrations at this year's Shocktoberfest if you plan on attending.

Just burn the tones on a cd and play them on your stereo. There is no way a laptop can put out 12 volts at the headphone jack. Adjust the speaker volume to 12V and you will be all set. My 02 800 tach was off 200 @ 7800 but dead on at 8500.
