Apparently there are quite a few guys on here who are knowledgeable about clutching, so I'll ask-

I'm looking for the best trail setup possible for my old RXL. It has plenty of top end, but I don't really use it too much. It lacks low end, and I want it to pull harder from corner to corner, I want the hard pulls in the low/mid range, but I don't want to lose ALL my top end, because I still do ride the old railbeds at a good clip.

My question is, what is the best clutching/gearing setup for this sled?

I'm keeping the engine completely stock, no triple pipes or anything, I only want the clutching/gearing changes done. I'm putting on some C&A Pro skis, and a handlebar riser, for more control in the trails, and now all I need is more pull coming out of corners, for it to be complete.

cant help with clutching, but try 20/39 gearing. that should work awesome for corner to corner acceleration and shouldnt hurt your top end.

Gear it down to 21/39. For clutching, get a hot seat black primary, some hot seat Z weights,(the number may be different now), a hot seat white secondary spring, and a HSP34S helix, hole #2. Use a 3211074 overdrive belt, and have the primary clutch reshimmed for the proper clearance. Verify the clutch alignment, as make sure the clutches are in good condition. Use only 1 .030" shim under the snap ring on the helix.

It sounds like you may be telling him to run a wide belt? If so the secondary needs shims added between the sheaves also, not just less behind the helix.

i think the hot seat z weights are the same as your
stock weights but notched.
if you like the way it comes in hard with them, use them.
but, it will be a b*tch on the trail because the clutch
will engage around 5500.

use the stock weights or step up about 1 gram
depending on where you settle in at the top.

the biggest help will be the white secondary spring
and the progressive helix.

I'm not looking for THAT high of an engagement, I don't need to grenade my chaincase.

Would it be easier for me to just buy the Hot Seat clutch kit, instead of these individual parts? It doesn't have to be perfect, I'm just looking for some improvement... without having to piece my chaincase back together when it blows up. Wow1.gif I'm not the most familiar person with clutches, so buying the clutch kit that has good directions might be the best bet? dunno.gif

i have a hot seat clutch kit in my ultra and am happy with it. it does engage at 5,200 rpm though

How do you like the setup? Is it too aggressive on trails? Have you lost much top end? Fill me in man, how do you like it?

the first time i loaded it on the trailer i almost jumped it. it is a lot more responsive and touchier than stock clutching but i am totally use to it now. backshifting is good. cruising at 50-60 and hitting the throttle only about an 1/8th and it books. i cant say on top speed because i never checked with stock clutching, but nobody has pulled me on the top end that did'nt pull me on the bottom. so i doubt it hurt top speed. everyone says a 600 twin will kill my ultra, but it never happened. the closest was a xcsp 600 and we were neck and neck until i started creeping at 90mph. im sure a 600h.o. or a f6 would be a different story.i would do it again any day.

if you don't want the high engagment,
don't use the hs kit because it has the notched weights.

the polaris helix is about half the cost of the hs helix.
42/36 will work but, you will get slightly better
pull on the bottom with a 45/36.

the cheapest route is polaris helix, primary spring (blue)
and non-bushed weights (53g).
use the hs secondary white, it works well.

the white secondary and progressive helix
will make the biggest difference for trail riding.

run the belt on the tight side, idle at 2000-2200rpm.
the soft compound belt will help too.

I'm a dealer for both HSP and EPI, For this sled I would us the EPI kit because I think this kit will work a little better for you. Back in 1990 through 1992 EPI was
dominating about everything with there RXL kits. imo.gif

FAST FRANKY is right. EPI was untouchable in seemed like. Any one who is a Parts unlimited dealer can get some of the EPI stuff too.
