Full Version: turning an xc into a mountain sled?

I own a 2000 700 xc and I am currently living in the high arctic where most of my riding consists of riding on sea ice. Floatation is not a concern. I am planning on moving back to BC probably in the coast mountains or the Kootneys and want to bring my sled with me . My question is how much work other than a long track new gears and some clutch work would I have to do to make it a mountain/powder worthy sled. I am trying to descide if I should sell it here or pay to ship it down south. By the way the motor only has 500 miles on a professional complete rebuild.

Thanks for any advice.

What do you have on it right now?

I have a friend out in VanCouver, WA. He has an '01 550 xc, and an '02 600 xc.
The first has a 1-1/4" x 15" x 136" track, and the second has a 1.5" x 15" x 136" track. I don't know what gearing he has but the jets are a simple thing to set up when you get there. I think he had powder pro skis but I'm not sure. ( never looked that close) His sleds had no problems getting around in the powder, his 550 was a little lacking power wise so you had to commit or quit on some of the climbs. You shouldn't have any problems with a 700. I personally think if you want to go all out, sell your sled and get an rmk or mountaincat, (an new m7 if you have the $$$), The revs look like they do better on trails from what I've read and heard, although they can climb quite well themselves.

Thats m2c.gif ! Hope it helps?

P.S. ALOT of fun in Wyoming this February with my trail sled! and went everywhere a 800 rmk 2"x15"x151" did. Had a few close calls in the really deep and fluffy stuff but then I only have 1.358"x13"x128".

Here's a pic of a small jump up a cornice!

I had a 99 XC700 with a 136 X 1 3/4" notched trac on it. Stretched tunnel, and rail extensions. I am thinking of selling te extension kit, rails, tunnell ext, and track. It works great, just wanted a 144 underneath it, so it would float a little better.
