Just bought a new 04 700 yesterday, and noticed after opening the
cowling, the exhaust is dripping black oil from around the joints.
More so at where the dounut gasket is. Is there anything I can
seal this with? It's really making quite a mess in back of the motor.

Permatex Ultra Black. If the sled is oozing oil like that this tells me this sled is super fat on jet and oil side. Check this site for jetting reccomedations and also consider your riding style and jet accordingly. :beerchug:

i allways use permatex ultra copper silicone. don't use the
black, its not rated for that high of heat.
i used to use just the permatex ultra copper on my s.b. chevys
to seal the exhaust headers to the heads, no gaskets at all. not
one leak ever! hell, one time i took half of the header bolts out
with my fingers and they still were not leaking.

My sled isn't oozing oil, just a few drops. If I don't seal the leak, I'll
have a mess. Can you buy the ultra copper at any auto parts?

as long as they sell permatex products[which most any auto parts
store does]then they should have the ultra copper.

It'll heal itself after a few miles on the trail. No sealer should be used on the graphite donut.

AFJ-Why would it be bad to put the sealant on the doughnut? I just did this a few weeks ago, when i had the exhaust apart to clean around the engine, and to install a newer doughnut on the 500....is this a big time

i allways put a little ultra copper on all my exhaust seals on my sleds.
keeps under the hood looking a lot better than without. it don't matter
what they are made of they will leak some with all the vibrations. the \
soft grafite dougnut does do a good job, but still needs a little help.
i have seen some companies do it from the factory. i have also noticed
that the poo twins like to eat exhaust springs, especially the 7's and 8's.
a little silicone across the spring will help dampen the vib's and keep the
springs alive too :div20:

It's not necessary. I've got over 17,000 combined miles on small block Polaris motors. I've never had a leak from the donut area. If it leaks, either the donut needs replacement, the springs are weak, or the pipe flange area is bent from being dropped. The graphite donut is designed to be self lubricating. Adding a sticky sealant defeats the purpose.
