I am looking for a wholsaler or outlet that has High Density foam for snowmobile seats.
The faom at most upholstry shopes is to soft. I am rebuilding Sled seats and raising them About 5" then making up new covers.
Looking for enough foam materal to do 3 seats to start.
Thanks

What I would look for if I were you (because I am looking into redoing my seat and looking at different types of foam) is try to source out some polyethylene foam. That's the same type of foam that those "pool noodles" are made of. It's also the same type of foam that Boss uses in it's seats as it is lightweight, holds its shape, and is closed cell, so it doesn't take on water (and become ridiculously heavy). I would build the main block of the seat with that, then if you wanted some extra cushion, inlay some open-cell foam on top for a little softer seat. When I do get around to it, that's my plan. One person suggested to me that I would just go and pick up a few of those rectangular pool noodles, cut them and use some appropriate adhesive.
Just a thought.

If you ever find some foam that's as comfortable as my 2003 700 Classic seat, let me know. Perhaps you could re-do my motorcycle seat.

This is a product used to make seat foam. The only problem would be shipping from the US. It would have to be shipped ground. You could cast a rectangular block and cut your own shape. It's also closed cell, so it doesn't absorb liquid. Download the two PDFs to read more about it.
http://www.tapplastics.com/shop/product.php?pid=79Because a seat is soft does not necessarily mean it is the foam. The cover material thickness/stiffness and also venting affect the softness. That's why Boss seats have vent holes.

hey 700xcbigblock,
who is doing the upolstry for you? Im in the process of raising my seat height as well and need a new seat cover to accomodate the added seat height. If your making your own, what are you using for fabric?
The foam I'm using is packing material from electronic components. Its white closed cell foam seems to be exactly what Low-1 is describing.
I've used a foam called Eppa foam when making traveling cases for equipment. It's black and fairly stiff, it could be used for the core and then use the polyethelyne on top for some cushon. only problem is that it cost $350 for a 4x8 sheet of 2''. You could build a few seats with a 4x8 sheet.
Look under Foam in the yellow pages there are a few places there that can help you out.

Thanks for the Ideas Guy's.
low -1 Pool Noodle Foam for a base sounds like a good idea to try, may even help keep a sled afloat a bit or at least easy to recover if it ends up in the water.
Polaris Dave I am familiar with with the seat casting foam, have seen it used on custom motorcycle seats. I think it would be to costly and heavy for a sled seat if it is the same materals that I have seen before. Thanks for the info on the venting.
RoostKing I have a good friend that is an upholster, he does a lot of custom bike seats and cars from stock vintage to Rods.
I made a topper to raise my seat 5'' last season, made it from the dementions and shape of an 07 Apex seat. Worked great and made my sled a lot nicer to ride with 4'' bar riser but looked like shit, so I plan to build a whole new seat and recover for this year. Last year I installed a 05 Fusion rear skid in my XC 700. Worked out Perfect and I can really eat up the rough stuff compaired to the old Xxtra 10 skid.
I will post pic's of my seat project and what it cost, my upholstry friend will prob. be interested in doing more after we get this one woked out

Yes, please post pics of your seat and also of your sled with the Fusion skid! I'm also interested in raising the seat on my 98 XC7.

I have done several. and I have had the best luck buying old sled seats and using the foam out of it. you can buy old tore up seats cheap, and it is obviously the right density for sleds

I guess once the prototype is made repeating it will be fairly easy. Pics and cost would be awsum. Keep us in the loop.
I did the edge rear susp in my xc7 2 years ago. Put a clicker shock on it last year, unbelievable how much better it is compared to the pps junk that was on it. Last year I put an 01 800 in the old dog, should have done that a long time ago as well.
So all thats left is to fix the seat height and put on a set of motox bars.

Raising the seats on the older sleds is a great idea I did mine last year with a 5" riser and it made the sled 100% more comfortable to ride. I have a perfect condition Mach 1 seat foam that I had to replace when I sunk my sled if anyone wants to buy it.

Well I picked up my foam today from Vita Products just off Main Street, $50.00 with taxes for a block about 20''x 24''. Nice and firm just like the new seats, the also had a foam a bit firmer yet but once covered and compressed the foam I picked up should be perfect. I will post picks as explaining what we plan, it will be tough without pic's. Pulled my sled into the shop last night, Removed my seat and took the vinyl cover off the foam. I have the type of seat with the gas tank and seat base as one peice so I plan to use some of the old foam, more or less just cutting a square section out of the old foam and using the 24'' length of new foam glued in then shaped to fit in perfectlyware I sit. Pic's by Tues. next week, won't have time till monday to play with it. My buddy that will be doing the sewing and shaping with me really knows what he is doing and has great design ideas and he does exceptional quality work. Here is a pic af my sled with the Fusion Skid and 4'' Bar riser again home made and adjustable.

My seat off my 03 ZR9 is at an Upholsters place by the name of Guy Anthony. Anyone ever heard of him? I work at a Polaris dealership and we use him for all our seats off pretty much anything you want to give him. He does amazing work and will do anything custom that you want. He is building my seat up 4 inches for a pretty decent price. I'll post pics when i get it back. Oh and i made a custom LED taillight to go with it. Cant wait to get it back
