Hi Guys! Need some help diagnosing a sled I picked up today. It's a 1991 Wildcat 700. Don't have any spark, but was trying to check everything before I buy a coil. The blue/white wire has 12-14 vdc when I pull the handle. No voltage off of the black wire, but I assume that thats a ground. Is there any thing else I should check? I havent been around sleds much and had never had a cat before so any help would be appreciated.

to my knowledge, those sleds have 2 coils on the stator that control the spark. One is the cdi charge coil and the other is what they call the exciter coil which sends the signal to trigger the cdi to release the spark. I used to have a wildcat and also had a clymer service manual for it. unfortunately I gave away the manual when I sold the sled or I would know what wire colors were which. You can pick up a manual for that sled on denniskirk.com for about $30. It will be priceless, especially for an older sled such as yours. If I was troubleshooting it myself, I would put an ohmeter across the the spark plug coil and make sure you get a reading. on the secondary and primary side of that coil. If you do have an ohms reading, then I would look at the stator. It's fairly unlikely that the cdi has gone. they are fairly reliable devices. Hope this helps

Thanks. I just ordered up a cd service manual. Along with this sled I got a 96 340 two up, and this cd covers 90-98 so hopefully I can figure it out.

Always check the TSS (throtle safety switch)before you go out and buy a bunch of electrical. If its an EFI it might not apply. Unplug the two prong connectors at the carbs. easy test.

You first want to isolate the engine from the chassis wiring [kill/ ign switches etc] so unplug the main chassis wiring plug from the engine, then using a jumper, short the brown wire and the black wire together on the engine side of the plug you just unplugged..
Check for spark, if you still don't have spark you have a ign. component problem. If you do have spark the problem is probably in one of the switches for the engine. Bypass one switch at a time by shorting their wires together untill you find the problem. Older sleds have open to kill, closed to run on all their ign. switches.

there should be a connector that goes up to the handle bars/ign switch if i can remember it is a 4 wire connector but just unplug the one side(2 seperate connectors going into one) one of them bypasses all of your switches kill, ign, safety, had a bad ign swith on my 92 ext.
