I've got an old cub cadet 1450 w/ a 14hp kohler the other day it died while i was mowing my lawn, i diagnosed a bad coil replaced it yesterday started mowing the lawn again and it died again, my diagnosis: a bad coil, any ideas what might be burning up the coil?? the points look good, I don't know what else to check, and at $30 a pop coils are getting expensive

voltage regulator?

internal or external resistor? some are made to be ran with a resistor... did you check to see how many volts are going to it... like the other person said, if the voltage regulator is allowing too many volts, it could be burning them out.

It's internal regulator, 12v supply, the voltage regulator is good, I checked running voltage when i replaced the coil the first time 13.1v

Hmmmmm.. the first one probably died of natural causes.... the second one might have been just a P.O.S I'd try one more... they should warranty the last one

It looks like it was just a bad replacement coil. It ran for a solid 2 hours with no problems on the third coil
