Very nice sled!! My '96 zrt800 was one of my favorite sleds. For it's day and weight, that chassis was ahead of many others in handling. You can just point and shoot that sled wherever you want to go. Make sure you go over all the bearings on that thing. I had serious problems with the jackshaft bearings before I had 1000 miles on mine. Had to have the shaft trued and Cat would not help me at all. My bellypan also caught on fire when going through a lot of powder from the pan pushing up against the pipes. If it wasn't for those issues, I might have held on to that sled because it was silly fast stock and handled better than my friend's lighter sleds at the time. A lot of guys have slapped an ett skid under there and got great results. Good luck and stay on top of lubing everything well.
SLP_Firecats
thanks.

Hey man! Great looking sled for 1K! And looks a hell of alot better than the one you were about to buy from that stroke that sold it under you...
Congrats!
SLP_Firecats

Still true today, if you do the 46" stance / 13+ inch travel mod done on the ski suspension.

Good advice, it helps a lot. The ETT skid is a must if the sled gets the front end 46"x13" mod.

A riding buddy has an F8 SP, he can't touch me on the tight & twisties with a 98ZRT with 46"x13" mod (AGLT)... Or on the lake either. In retrospect he now wishes he had bought all the pieces to build a brand new one to replicate my old one, chassis & all still available (according to Brown's), instead of getting the F8 SP. After test riding his F8 SP, I think he's right.

Check those carb flanges between the carbs & reed cage! If they have never been replaced, probably cracked by now!

I hate to give you any ideas, but a D&D big bore kit with pipes willut you around 200 hp.
Hager
you wanna go fast? 192 studs, 8 inch idler wheels, with 25/37 gears. That bastard will have more top end than most people know what to do with!
SLP_Firecats
bad news! the middle and right cylinder quit firing. new coil, still no fire, new plugs, still nothing. checked and refreshed all grounds, still nothing. WTF! when i get it running i need a kick ass drag setup for 600 ft. any ideas?

if the stator was bad y would 1 cylinder still be firing?

It's not your stator if one if still firing. I had lots of problems with a botched throttle safety switch bypass. Someone previously had cut all the carb wires, pigtailed the wires and used electrical tape to keep them together. Sled would run fine sometimes and then not at other times. Sometimes it seems it's only one or 2 cylinders working.

Mostly likely things to check. Stuck choke plungers will cause no spark. If you seem to have excess fuel in some of your pipes that's a good thing to check. Probably wouldn't hurt to give the carbs a good cleaning anyway.

To see if it's an electrical bug, on a closed ignition system like this one, you can unplug the 4 wire connector near the stator. Place a jumper on the 2 non yellow wires on the stator side of the connector and it will bypass your key, kill, tether and throttle safety switch. If it runs with this jumper in place your lights wont work because it's powered by the yellow wires, but it means your CDI, stator and coils are fine. You'll have to pull the jumper or choke it to kill the engine.

the ZRT woke up out of its coma tonight and made a full recovery after starting and running on 1 cylinder for about 10 seconds, then it picked up the other two. only thing i did was go through the whole electric system and resurface all the grounds.
Mutta
Now that is much better looking then that rust bucket you all most bought. Good job on getting it running!! Now enjoy it and think snow.

when a stator goes bad all kinds of weird stuff happens. one time i saw one go bad and the motor ran backwards, it was funny cause it ran but wouldnt get the clutch to engage and it would just rev up, and we were stumped and then we got lookin at it thinkin it was somethin in the clutch but nope, the stator was bad and it was runnin backwards. since there is no real firing order on those try and take the coil that is firing and put it on a different cylinder and see what happens. its just a start to see whats goin on. it also could be the throttle jumper wires, down by the carbeurateurs there should be 3 connectors with like jumper wire things on them and sometimes the jumper wires will break or the connection will corrode, those r just another thing to check. hope this helps
sno_pro_500
hager the gearing you selected 25/37 is it for the 600 or the 800 zrt and for the 136" or the 121 zrt just thinkinking about it after reading the post thanks for any info. i have a zrt 600 136" looking how to make it better all stock..

Nice looking sled. I wish I could find a T-Cat in that shape. As for the firing.. my 96 ZRT 600 for whatever reason would almost always foul the middle cylinder plug; I bought it brand new and it did it all the time. This was very common, escpecially if the sled was set at factory settings. Next time it does it change the plugs and I guarantee the thing will run on three. I imagine the sled has been started and shut off numerous times while you were checking it out, loading it up, and if your like me you have been starting it to hear it run...

Very nice sled!! Best of luck!!!

I would be on the look out for a new stator.I would bet its gonna resurface soon.
