The dragon button is a pipe Preheat button for racing. You really shouldn't ever use it if your trail riding. It could munch your reeds if your not careful. If it doesn't do anything while your running the sled it probably was disconnected by the previous owner. If it was working you would hear a significant change in the tone of the engine and it would start spittering and sputtering. Any edge model hood will fit on your sled, and just keep checking the classifieds for a trailing arm. How loose is loose on the running boards. Its normal for a older race sled to have a bit of flex to the running boards but it shouldn't flex a whole lot.

Oh yeah, if it hasn't been done so already you should have the cases split and drill a hole for the oil to get to the other bearing. Over in the 440 race\modified section more info can be found on that.

Two of my friends who raced on the Rock Maple circuit had the same snowmobile.

The first time I tried the "dragon button" on one of the Pro-XRs, the owner said, "Push down the button and hold it in. Floor the throttle. HANG ON WITH BOTH HANDS. Let go of the button." The engine sounded weird when I held down the button and floored the throttle -- it sputtered and backfired -- but when I let go of the button and the XR took off, I felt like I was being shot out of a slingshot.

My Pro-X 600 holds its own against bigger machines, especially in shorter distances, but the Pro 440 XR is quicker. At a snocross race a few years ago, my friend was killing an F-7 on holeshots in the run-what-you-brung class. Of course the F-7 would crush it on top-end if they ever met up on a lake, but from 0-75 (top speed of the XR), you'll be in front of just about anything.

halVORTEX is right about the reeds. If you use the dragon button all the time, you'll break your reeds. Maybe all the sputtering and backfiring results in the breaking?

the running boards should flex some but if its been raced i bet your running boards are cracked all the way accross just underneath the footwell. mine were. just take them out and have them tiged up tight.

Not all edge hoods will fit. only '04 pro x hoods will fit and '04 they are cut at the back way different

DUH! I feel stupid now, I forgot about the 04 steering post and the hoods on the 04's. I'm sorry he is right, you'd have to modify a normal hood to get it to work. I haven't looked to close at the 04's so I don't know all that is involved.

No, I don't think it needs to be done for racing.
