Are colored window tints allowed here in maine? Has anyone been pulled over for having darker than 50% on the side windows? How do you guys get inspected with really dark tint, do you take the tint off for inspection then put new stuff on?
duckman_04290
Ironically i was speaking with my local sherriff and he stated to me that u can go 50% with a paper certifying that it is what it is.
larue1966
I Thought it only could come that way from the factory or no sticker if it was done yourself

i do state inspections for a chrysler dealer and 3 years ago they updated the law on tint to needing a certification slip that you can get at places like portland glass sunrise glass or most of the custom places. but if i see tint im not supposed to issue the sticker with out certification. i personally if its not to dark and i can still easily see in dont fail it. i heard that state police can do certify it too.
BeersRacing15
screw that i run 20 on mine and they dont bother

What is the rating on the cling-on stuff that you can buy at VIP or Autozone etc?

One things for sure no matter whats 'legal'. You will get punked by law enforcement for doing it.
They understandably hate not seeing in cars and will single you out.
They 'will' find a reason to stop/watch you because your 50% tinted. Good luck.

actually you can run 30% now instead of 50 % w/ the certacation paper. they changed the law last year. i have 50 % on the wifes car(before they changed) and on my 08' truck i have 30 % now and its legal.
sledmaine
really? on the driver and passenger doors?
duckman_04290
well thats what the oxford county sherriff told me...
vmaxx05stud
yep. i was suprised my self. rear window you can black right out but side windows cant be any darker then the 30%

I do certified window tint at my shop and can certify others tint as well.
The only thing that has changed about the law is this. You may add any amount of tint to a window not to exceed 35%. The law used to read you may add 50%, not to exceed 35%. This only helps the few cars out there that come through with no tinted glass, mostly older cars and cheap new cars. Even a clear window will measure 85-90%. Tinted glass from the factory can not be below 70% with most being 70-75%. So the law really didn't change much at all.

I have not been notified that they changed it to 30%. If they did, it wont change a thing looks wise. I get the updates every year but havent for a while.

Not sure what your talking about with back windows, there are alot of misconceptions out there. different stations believe different things, even cops believe different things.

If your passenger car is tinted it must have a tint certificate to be inspected, if it is tinted and they did not check for it, they are at falt. Passenger cars may only be tinted down to 35% on all windows, not just the sides.

If you have a vehicle on a truck frame or a vehicle considered a MPV(stated on door tag) only the front two windows must be down to 35%. the rest can be covered up, tinted dark, painted, anything. I know this sounds dumb. It was, afterall made by legislators so stop trying to figure out why its dumb.

If you have a dark vehicle, make sure you get it inspected in the summer on a hot day, it will be less conspicuous with all the windows down.

the facts are that if you are in an accident where vision is in question, your illegally tinted vehicle is at falt, thus you are at falt and the guy that tinted your vehicle illegally is at falt. This is why I do not do any illegal tinting. plus, I would hate to think i killed or hurt someone just so i could look a little cooler.

if you have any other questions about tint just let them fly.

betheviper, you are right about 35% as i went back looked at my post and realized i put 30% when its actually 35%(which i have the legal certificate) for the tinted windows. if you have a suv or say a limo you can have all the rear windows blacked out except for the front 2 side windows which have to be no more then35% blacked out as i understand it. sorry for the confusion.

if your a coach vehicle, any vehicle liscenced to carry human remains, you can blacken the windows as well even if it is a car.

i would love to see them change the laws to allow 35% added to the windows in the rear of a car.

how much did you pay in southern maine to have your vehicles done, just wondering how i compare
sledmaine

I test the windows for free, if it passes, 10$ for a certificate.
hickey's got a yami
5% cost 10$. when they stop my i rip it off and buy 5% and put it back on the next day for next year. just dont act like an a$$ hole while driving around. like a can on a loud sled. just buy a sticker.
sledmaine
I dont know anyone to buy a sticker from. lol its only like $11 at VIP so its cheap enough to replace every year
