From the AMA motorcycle laws page for the State of maine

Safety Helmet Required by law for those under age 15; or operating under a learner's permit; or operating less than one year with license/endorsement; or as a passenger of an operator required to wear protective headgear
State Funded Rider Ed Available for all eligible applicants-required for first-time applicants


Eye Protection No Restriction
Daytime Use of Headlight Required by law


Passenger Seat Required if carrying a passenger
Passenger Footrest Required if carrying a passenger


Passenger Age Restriction None
Helmet Speakers No Restrictions


Periodic Safety Inspection Required by law
Mirror Left(L) Right® One required by law


Radar Detector No Restriction
Turn Signals Required if manufactured in 1974 and after


Muffler No acoustical criteria.
Maximum Sound Level No acoustical criteria.


State Insurance Requirements Compulsory Liability (Minimum Limits)(50/100/25 & $1,000/person for medical payments)
Handlebar Height Handgrips below shoulder height


Rider-Education Waiver No
Accept Motorcycle Endorsement From Other States Yes


Accept RiderEd Completion Card From Other States Yes
Motorcycles operating two abreast in same lane Yes. §2062 - Motorcycles Lane use; motorcycles and mopeds. An operator of a motorcycle other than a moped may fully use a lane. More than 2 motorcycles may not be operated abreast within the same lane.


Lane Splitting §2062. Motorcycles 6. Between lines. A person may not operate a motorcycle between lanes of traffic or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles.

Looks like MaineSledda basically covered all your bases.

Not unless your passenger is under 15. And it looks like if you legally have to wear one, then they do too.

Some people just don't like it. Think it ruins the experience a little. My dad refuses to wear one, even if it is a much smarter choice.
