Most guys start their gaspesie trips from rimouski. if you have limited time to do a loop, starting in matane is an option.

coming from ottawa, your choices are to stay on the north shore, drive thru quebec city, on out thru the charlevoix, cross the saguenay on the ferry to tadoussac, head out the cote nord to baie commeau, and begin your trip there by loading your sleds on the ferry to matane. the other approach is to cross the st-laurence at montreal, trois riviere, or quebec city, and drive out along the south shore to rimouski or matane (this is the quicker) if you have more time for your gaspe riding than 3 or 4 days, you can always unload your sleds at levis, trois pistoles, etc, and get in more raiding heading out thru the bas-st-laurent or chaudiere appalaches

I will try and give you a little insight of my experiences with the Gaspe.

I have left from Lac William (Thetford Mines area) and everywhere further east. It depends on how many miles you ride a day, how many sleds are in the group, what age the sleds are, what routes you take and most important of all, the weather. Personally, I prefer to take the green trails whenever possible. In a normal season 90% of the traffic is on the main trail. If you like a lot of bumps that is ok, I prefer the smooth trails. The south shore has always had better riding conditions than the north. Less severe wx maybe or better grooming??? The Amqui area and all green trails in this area are fantastic. Northern New Brunswick is an option back if you leave from RDL or further west. Just make sure everyone has a NEW spare belt with them!

My perfect trip would be: Unload in Saint Joseph de Beauce (1 mile from IS73), East to St Pamphile on 55, E to Cabano via 35 and 548. Leave Cabano for Rimouski via 548, E on main trail to Mont St Pierre. Mont St Pierre to the turn for Murdochville, south to the turn for local trail west to 597 and then south to New Richmond. New Richmond to Point ala Croix, cross the bay to Campbellton. W to Kedgewick River, Moose Valley. Baker Lake, Clair and connect back on to the east end of 35. There are options galore to get back to St Joseph. Going to the top of Mont Magloire to the look-out on a clear day either on the way out or back is highly recommended. Also, there is another look-out in New Brunswick. After passing the stop light on the trail take the turn for Squaw Cap mountain off the main trail, maybe 6 to 8 miles down the trail. Awesome view!

Going through New Brunswick bypasses Groomer's trails in the Amqui area. A ride up to Amqui on the main trail and then back to Point ala Croix on the local would be fabulous if you have time. The local trail is a bit west of the main trail, starts near the Amqui clubhouse and comes out on the main trail a few miles north of Cross Point.

Gas is a big issue I think. I checked the price a couple of days ago and 145.4 seemed to be the average. Would expect to see $6 per gallon or more by snowmobile time. Add twenty cents or more depending how far out you are.

The Amqui area had 27.4 feet of snow last winter and the reason I am telling you is so you can beware of the weather. I have spent 2 days in a hotel/motel waiting for a blizzard to pass. Trying to ride in one can be very dangerous, especially if you are not familiar with the trails. I have seen 450 miles on a good day and less than a hundred on a bad one and I am very familiar with the trails. I build a couple of days into every trip, 1 for sled problems and 1 for weather. Normal is using them both.

Have fun and hope this helps a little.
