Well last Friday, some old guy pulled out in front of me and I smoked him with the gf's car, writing them both off. His fault. The adjuster gave me a price today of what they are thinking it's worth, and she (the adjuster) must be on crack. I did a little searching on the 'net today and came up with similar comparable's for double the price I was offered by MPI. Anyone have any good info on dealing with MPI. Shit, you would think the money is coming out of her own pocket.

Well, I was told you have to bargain with them.

However, my own personal experience has been positive. Bought a nice truck (with not nice fuel mileage), and like an idiot wrote the dam thing off 2 months later during a storm - freak thing but it happens. Anyways they offered me $500 more than I paid for it. Won't get into the details but I thought it was fair for what I'd purchased and what the damages were so I took it. And then gas prices shot up - ain't it funny how things work out sometimes....

Anyways take a look at the estimate to repair (they'll fax it to you if you ask) to see what the damages are. Ask them what the book value is, and try to crunch the numbers yourself as best you can. Take a look at the Salvage Auctions at their website to get an idea of what they re-sell for. Ask why they're offering what they are, tell them what you've found during your research, and try to work something out.

Sorry man but that's the best I can offer, maybe others here have had more experience.

Go through every buy and sell, and auto trader and internet ad you can find of an almost identical vehicle and take that in as proof for what the vehicle is worth. High milage and poor condition of course will work against you, but never accept their first offer, and always fight them right to the point of arbitration....and past that on some occasions.

They are trained to low ball on the first offer and always have room to work, however sometimes it seems you just get an a-hole adjuster and they don't do anything for you no matter what proof you provide. Also take any repair bills you have that are not just regular maintenance and show them those as well, and if you've lost them, go back to the shop you had the work done at and get copies and possibly if they really know the car a letter stating it's condition.

If there is one crooked crown corp. in this country it's MPI...you pay a fortune and get shit back!!

Internet adds don’t mean anything. MPI goes by “comparable markets”. So if those cars are any where but Manitoba and Saskatchewan they won’t be considered.
What kind of car? (make, model, year, options, mileage)
atc250r
'99 Olds Aurora. Every option except sunroof. 2nd owner. 134,000 highway kms. Garage kept. Near showroom condition. Licensed as pleasure 'cause thats all it was driven for.

worth about 7grand??
NB-NYTRO
What did they offer?

She verbally offered $4200, gf said no. Then immediately offered $5700, gf said no. Then said $6400, gf said no. So then she says to do our own search of comparables, which I have printed out and will drop off on Monday. $9000 is not unreasonable imo, given the condition. We still have the original window sticker which shows a new price of $47955. Kind of depressing.

Those cars are almost impossible to sell. The $6400 plus taxes is reasonable. You wouldn’t be able to sell that car for that much.

its a 10 year old vehicle...

the problem is that most people value their own stuff more than others do or think its worth higher than fair market value because they took "special" care of it... and expect insurance to replace it.. if MPI was to buy you another '99 aurora would you take it? basically they are giving you market value for your car.. which is going to go by year & mileage possibly.. there's alot of loaded 01's in the trader asking under 9... key word "asking"

i'd say anywhere from 5-7 would be reasonable for a '99 regardless of trim...

good luck, thumbs up for GF to hold out...

Good points, I would say bring them your info, and then aim for about $7800.00 and then hopefully they will come back with $7500 and then it's time to walk away. Cars have dcreased a lot, especially since over the border their a steal, so try and aim high, but 9 might be a little too high.

One time an old guy wasn't paying attention and smoked the rear right side of my truck in the winter. Its lifted so all he caught was the tire and did a little damage. I ended up ripping the front bumper off his car. This happened in January.. I have been to the claims center 3 or 4 times since giving written diagrams and written statements of what happened. The old bastard even got out of his car and told me he wasn't paying attention and it was his fault but, is telling MPI a different story. MPI said its 50/50.
atc250r
Yeah this was a 71 year old he is 100% at-fault.

Internet adds( such as Canadatrader.com) do work because i had the same problem a year ago when my truck was written off and they offered a lot less than what i felt i could get. I gathered 5 or 6 adds from the website and took them in and they increased their offer to what more reasonable. You just have to do the research and fight for more because most people will just roll over and take the first offer.
