I had very good results with a Polaris almond (preferred) or Erlandson Red with 10-54, 10A (55grams) or 10-56 weights combined with Hot seat 38S (50-38 compound cut) or 36S helix and silver/blue Polaris in #3. Weights will depend on what it will pull and what your target RPMS are - adjust accordingly. 46-36 Full progressive or 48-36 full progressive also worked well, but preferred the hotseat helix.

This was my setup...
But, depends on which SLP pipes he has. 8100 rpm or 8700 rpm?
Mine were 8100 torque pipes:
10-58 weights; Polaris Almond Black Primary; 44/34 helix; EPI Black secondary spring #3.

Ran that set-up for a long time, and never failed. Ran it on the asphalt, tested time and time and was quicker than anything else I could come up with for 3 years. Stock gearing.

my brother has stock cluching and gearing on his ultra and with the slp pipes it runs ok but I think cluching will help a lot.

If he is running stock clutching with either set of SLP pipes, there is room for improvement. Like I said above, the clutch weights will depend on what your engine will pull and what RPM the pipes are supposed to run at. Get your tach calibrated first.....then find out what RPMs the pipes are supposed to run at. Weights to run are also going to be determined by length of track, lug height and terrain.....and what type of setup your are looking for -- trail or race. You could end up with 10-58's or as little as 10-54's. Lots of good choices of secondary springs that will work well. Polaris silver/blue, Erlandson black, Hot Seat Orange, etc.....but for certain, the stock red secondary will not work. Too soft.

My setup was with a 1.5" x 136 lug track.

I would phone SLP they could probably help you identify which pipes are on it. My brother-in-law had an Ultra, and let me tell you, make damn sure you know where the RPM should be for the pipes, and the recommended baseline clutching for those pipes. Some idiot put on a "clutch kit" on the sled before he bought it that was for the wrong pipes, and it would only pull something like 7500rpm and performance was pretty lacking. I believe that at least with the low rpm SLP pipes, you actually can go heavier than stock with the weights, but with the higher rpm pipes, I don't know. Supposedly you can make over 130hp at 8000-8100 rpm with the right pipes, although according to SLP every Ultra will need to be tuned slightly different for max performance.

In reality, what is "the best" in anything? What works for one, doesn't always work for another. Sometimes due to how it's set up or due to the condition of machine compared to another---too many variables. For where I ride, I run a 23-41 gearing, 10-56's w/165-310# drive spring, 46-36 coated helix (shifts the same as Erl 50-40) w/56-102# driven spring. This sled rocks, somebody else is going to come on here and say the sled will never pull it! "The Best" is when it does everything you want it to do to your satisfaction!

Ya I see what you mean that stuff about how one thing works for him and it may not work for you.

p.s. the ultra is 143 horse power with slp pipes so they clame.

Did you contact slp...they generally have a clutch set up that will put you in the ball park if using their products.....otherwise if its a modded motor built by someone else...like already mentioned....what might work fine for someone...may not be your setup needed depending what kind of power it makes. Your going to have to test...test ...test.
