GAYLORD TO CHEBOYGAN TRAIL NEWS
Snowmobiling has been allowed on the 11 mile section along west Mullet Lake for the last two years. The Department of Natural Resources will evaluate the use of snowmobiles on this segment of trail, including compliance with the restrictions, following two full seasons of snowmobile use.
The restrictions were to close the trail to all snowmobile traffic from midnight to 8 AM, and have a speed limit for the whole 12 mile stretch of 35 MPH.
The special land use orders were signed by Rebecca A. Humphries, director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) two years ago. The evaluation of the impact of snowmobiling will be conducted this month and any change to the order allowing snowmobiling will be brought to the Natural Resource Commission.
Over the last two years the department has continually received complaints about snowmobiling from the same handful of residents along the trail. Law enforcement officials have noted a few violations for curfew, and speeding. These violations and complaints will most likely be weighed by the department against the value that snowmobiler's have brought to the area, as well as the maintenance the clubs along the trail have done.
MSA needs you to get out your pen and let the department know that you want the trail to stay open to snowmobilers. If you have ridden the trail, your ride will speak for itself. If not, here are a few ideas. The grade is the only permanent way to get from Gaylord to the bridge through the center of the state. Private land, swamp and lakes make all other routes suspect. The value that snowmobile dollars bring to the businesses in northern Lower Michigan allows them to stay open.

I almost fell of my rocker this morning!
I sent a quick e-mail to Robin Pearson at the address above....maybe 2 paragraphs or so voicing my opinion on the trail....and she replied!!
how is that for service, I never expected a reply and she thanked me for the letter and would continue to work with the DNR and update me with the meeting that is scheduled June 27 at the Indian River High School from 7 - 9 PM.
every Michigan sledder needs to jump on this ASAP.
we have an ear that will listen....June 27 is coming up really fast and we need to flood her department with our side of the story.

Just a quick response back to let you know that your Canadian friends/sledders are on board and intend to let the DNR office hear from us as well.
From my own observations on the trail in mention, the restictions were being followed.I met residents walking along the trail, who stepped aside to let us pass and gave a friendly wave.We all know it only takes a couple of "HOTDOGS" to ruin it for all of us.
They're only asking two things!
1.Do 35mph in that stretch
2.Curfew 11pm-8am.
Treat that section like you live there and we'll keep it open.

Sent mine. I've said it before and I say it again....this situation is no different from the Chocolay Twp Trail near Marquette. Residents were pissed, the DNR opened it with restrictions, speed and curfew, and it's been open ever since. The key is to enforce the restrictions. If anyone has ridden the Chocolay trail, you could not have missed the signs stating the restrictions on them. I have not ridden the West Mullett trail since it opened and wonder if there are similar signs posted at both ends of the restricted section? If so and idiots don't heed to their warning then they deserve a ticket, no ifs, ands, or buts!!! I hope they realize the economic importance of keeping this direct connector to several areas open.

EXACTLY!!
I just rode the Chocolay trail this winter...it is a bit tough to maintain the slow speed but it is the quickest route and your appreciate it more. Marquette is still not sled friendly, we never did find a gas station to hit while there and actually had to limp it to "Sand River" gas station. Small place and it's just a fuel barrel next to the motel.....but the guy was friendly and happy to see us. He also has a webcam on Johndee so it was nice to support a guy with a webcam for sledders.
