I have a 1500 Ram pick up 4.7 gas job. With the rising price of gas, as we all know, I would like to know if anyone out there has a good way to get more mileage out of this 14mpg Ram. I like the truck, do not like the mileage. Ive put a K&N air filter in the stock box didn't do anything for it. The rest of the truck is stock!

Trucks and MPG don't belong in the same sentence. Just not meant to be. If you want mpg, pick up a jetta tdi.

i have an 03 ram 1500 qc 4x4 with the 4.7.....prob the exact same truck as you and i thought the same thing i should get better mileage. so i did some things that helped out big time. first i went and had all my fluids changed to synthetic ( diff, trans case, crankcase, etc. ) that picked me up about 1mpg on the highway. next i did a k&n kit with the new intake tube and everything, that got me about another 1mpg better, next and the biggest difference i have made so far is an electric fan kit. i went down to my local speed shop and got a single 16" fan with a probe heat sensor to turn the fan on at 180 degrees total cost of about $220 dollars. pulled the old clutch driven fan off put the new electric fan in about an hour. picked up 1 mpg in town and about 2.5 on the highway. now I routinely get 18+ on the highway going 70+ mph ( unless its windy) if i'm on back roads i will get 20+ going 65-70 with the cruise on. also check little stuff like make sure your tires are properly inflated, at least 35lbs, and make sure the engine is in proper running condition. also don't run the defrost mode unless you need it, on that truck the a/c compressor runs if the defrost is on creating load on the engine also. if you want more info on the fan kit pm me
I also did a fan kit on my cummins diesel that already got 20 empty on the highway and now it gets 23-24 on the highway.

Thanks for the help Dieselgeek! I'll just go over and load 3/4's of a ton of lime in the trunk, that would make a lot of sence.

Thanks, that was some good idea's, I would never thought of the fan,and the defrost is another one that i would not thought of. Thanks again!!!

I drive a truck as well, as I need to tow boats, sleds, soil, equipment, etc. I have a truck for a reason, but good mpg just isn't going to happen. I average around 18 in the summer, and 15 in the winter.

I helped my buddy put a cat back "dual" exhaust on his 4.7, I think it was by Gibson, anyway, he lost about 1.5-2mpg from it. ouch. Then he added a chip to try and gain it back, did not help at all. I'd definately keep the truck as stock as possible and do the electric fan first.

Well I get 14,15 mpg all season long, up hill, down hill, and I feel this truck should give me at least 18. And I thought this web site may be a good place to get a few good idea's! You know I read down threw the sled area's and give helpful words of help to anyone that will take it. When I read of people that ride 800 or 900 that want to get just a few more mile's out of there sleds, I do not pipe up and tell them to just buy a 1000!!!!! Thanks again Dieselgeek

I would put on an exhaust to allow the engine to breathe a bit more, and look into a programmer or chip. I don't see you picking up 3-4 mpg though. You might pick up 1-2mpg at best.

I've got a 2001 Blazer (a.k.a. S-10 Blazer) LT with the 4.3L V6.
I recently upgraded with a Dynomax higher flow cat-back exhaust system (it has more of a low rumble, but it is not loud), a Fram Air Hog high flow air filter, Champion Iridium spark plugs, and Mobil 1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy Synthetic motor oil. I also keep a close eye on tire pressure and try to be gradual with my right foot.
At last check, I was getting around 18.5 around town and 20 on the highway (doing over 75 MPH), which is not bad for a vehicle with a tow rating of 5,000 lbs. The vehicle has an "old" EPA Rating of 15/20 and a "new" EPA Rating of 14/18.
I really like the idea of the electric fan.

CAI's do not help with mpg's. More Air = Computer Compensating with more Fuel. As for power, a stock engine does not require enough CFM's to make the intakes "amazingly unrestricted flow!!!!" even near worth it. You would need at least 5 pounds of boost to see the difference. Besides, the best filters on the market were proven to be ACDelco's paper filters. K&N, Airraid, and Volant, ranked the worse, they flow nice and free, and allow huge dirt particals to go strait into your engine.
-The throatier sound coming from the front of your vehicle, and 200+ dollars spent on the product, definitely help with the "seat of your pants" feel when you punch the throttle though, that's for sure
hahaah i sound like such a bser, but its true.

you have to check this web site out, www.waterforfuel.com, hydrogen power my friend, have seen couple designs built first hand.
still in testing, but seeing good results.

I have a 2003 silverado ss awd. 6.0L motor 345hp stock. I ordered hptuners for it. It is a software program that allows you to change almost anything in the setup of the truck. Thinks like air fuel ratio, spark control, timing advance, knock retart, idle speed, air flow (CAI and exhaust), torque management, line pressure, shift points, gear ratio, tiresize, fuel cutoff, power enrich, accel enrich, if you have or put on electric fans you can adjust when they turn on and off. Way more stuff than I know how to adjust. But on the highway I now get over 21mpg. Not sure what that is in U.S. mpg roughly 17 or so. I thought that was ok for a 345hp awd truck. I put a tonneau cover on and will be trying a few more things in the tune to improve my mileage. I think its not bad mileage for a truck that will do 0-60 in 6.0secs.
