I went to a region 7 meeting last month, and there was some discussion about re-naming it to become the CJ Ramstad Memorial Trail. Some of the repercussions from the "politically correct" bunches in the Twin City areas think the North Shore Trail shouldn't get funding because it is located so close to Lake Superior, and they don't want any damage done to the pristine lake...(even though the actual trail route lies many miles away, the perception from those uninformed think you can practically ride on the Lake, which is to be "left untouched".) Many non-snowmobilers have not accepted the sport as a true form of recreation, and would like to see it banned or closed altogether.

I was just stating what I heard. I don't care if they rename it or not, I never met CJ but all the reports I get about the guy is he was a very respected promoter and enthusiast of the sport. The consensus at the (annual election) meeting was well received. It was explained to us that the present name gives the impression the trail is practically right next to and on the Lake. The main reason appeared to be to lay to rest in the minds of the average media force-fed public that the trail has little to do with the lake, that they wanted to deflect any criticism about the "pollution" from snowmobiles, whether real or perceived by those who never get out to enjoy the GREAT outdoors.
I don't like the idea of "catering" to those political forces to begin with, because if they ever got outside the box, they could see it for what it really is, and maybe actually enjoy more out of life. Not many of those people seem to have a smile on their faces. Like they've got blinders on. Can't look to the right or left, and can't see what's in front of them either...
