hope some one can help me. i put a set of aaen pipes on my xlt along with clutch springs and weights and jets and lost all low end power. top end screams, runs out to about 9200 rpm but nothing on the bottom. clutch grabs at about 5000 to 5200. compression is about 115 across. got so bad i took it all of and put it back to stock. help.

According to Dyno Tech testing, the stock 93-94 XLT 580 with 34 mm carbs and 180 mains at 65 deg F makes peak torque of about 61 lb ft at 7750 rpm and peak hp of around 92 at 8000-8250 rpm. They conducted a pipe shootout at 43 deg F with 220 mains where Aaen pipes made 62.9 lb ft at 7750 and 63.6 lb ft torque at 8250 rpm and 100 hp at 85-8750 rpm.
That's at least as good as the stock setup at all rpms. It sounds like you've set the jetting too rich or the clutching too aggressive.

BTW, Aaen's pipes were among the lowest torque and hp of all the suppliers except DG. Decker pipes made 65.2 lb ft torque at 8250-8500 rpms and 108.6 hp at 8750 rpm.

It would also help to gear down a bit due to the higher peak hp rpm.

count your blessings that you didn't take the bottom end out... the best thing you can do for this engine is regear the chain case & leave it all stock, as they were none too good from the start.

Give Red a call in Mukwonago, 262 968 4311, he probably still has notes from when that sled was new and they were grass racing them. I would have left it stock, not a lot to gain with pipes on that sled, a couple MPH on the big end is about it.

My stock 580 was better than every piped one I ran against. Even itself, LOL. The guy that bought it had me put pipes on it, and it was way slower, running at rPM PSI said to run. I think we went heavier wts, ran around 8,300 with the pipes and then it ran fairly well, I still never thought it was as good as stock though.

Aaen's catalog back then claimed a 20 hp increase over stock on that sled with his pipes......

Yep, that was a typical hp increase when going from 3-1 to individual pipes on a Polaris old style 600-650 triple. It's an exageration on this engine.
The monoblock triple apparently doesn't breath as well as those earlier engines. Dyno Tech mentioned this in the first tests of the 93 version. Going to larger carbs gained nothing on the stock ported engine.

On the other hand, SLP had a 654 kit for these engines that really worked well. Yet, the old 600-650 engines remain the hp kings for full mod racing with a piston port engine. Just ask XCR1250.

My friend's from Fettig's racing won the vintage class "hands down" at Mt. Brighton Hill climb with a 1986 Indy 600.

I put aaen pipes on my 97 xlt jetted 2 sizes up and put a aaen clutch kit with weights the low end it has is incredible put a orange spring in the primary and a blue spring in the secondary along with 10 mw weights gave me alot of low end and midrange is incredible top end is about the same the gold stock spring in the xlts were known to sag and had issues my next choice is to change the hlix to a full progessive one which should really help out

If anybody thinks a geared and clutched xlt can hang with a properly tuned piped (clutched and geared too of course) xlt is on the pipe.

A buddy of ours had a regular 95 xlt 600 he professionally tuned himself...while not totally stock...had ported and did head mods to his spec. and added 38 mm mikuni tmx carbs...it still ran the stock single pipe system. With his gearing and clutching very few...i mean very few triple piped xlts could run with this sled in a 1000 feet or less. The looks he use to get after poping the hood and seeing basicly a stock motor in there upset a lot of riders.
