I have NY and Quebec snowmobile trails color coded by primary/secondary trails. Have NH/Maine snow trails all same color.
see gpssledmaps.com and gpsquebec.com
I have created each state and loaded seperately so I can control downlown time and file sharing.
I would load each map (snow or atv) so you can layer each.
It is easier to play with colors in mapsource and than load it to the device.
I leave city nav on even on trail so I can find my food/fuel spots but can switch to topo if needed in the bush.
Play with your map screen and learn how to turn on the dif maps you have loaded.
I use lith batteries and have a plug on the sled.

Ok thanks, yes I like to leave the mapsource in to, so as to find gas and food. what do the topo do for ya just a more detailed map?will try changing the color in mapsource,to see how that works .

I use topo more in canada (quebec/NB) and the great northern woods in maine.
When in the forest company areas the roads are normally on the topo.
Topo can show park roads and in early/late season the topography for water runoff and flooding areas that I waypoint so I know where they are and the mark shows up on the screen so I know the snowbridges or collapse/mud areas.
As you create maps and waypoints or tracks, download them to gpssledmaps.com and keep the date on everything (example: Caribou 1-08.ext) so it can be archived. Sled trails change over the years and gas and food close down or move.

I save the track, mark my waypoints to the local trail map, download to laptop and than reset the unit (GPS76csx) after every day's ride. Ride for 4 days, you have a detailed track for each day's ride showing waypoints. It is nice if someone asks you, how to ride from A to B towns, you can show them on mapsource with color and waypoints, time, elevation and speed.

As a club president, after a days ride, I can download a couple of guys data who went in dif directions and we can map an area pretty detailed.

I was one of the guys that gps mapped NY and if you go on our state assoc website www.nyssa.org we have a whole section on trail mapping and how we created our state trail map 100% gps'd. We use it to pay the groomers.

If you mount with power cord on sled, I found that a coiled plug with a led showing power works best (EBAY).
I take mine apart, fill with silicon sealant to damper vibration and keep a spare with me. Had a pre silicon unit go out on me in a storm, at night, 60 miles from the border..... be prepared! Use everyready lith batteries and I put a PDA lens protector on it during outdoor play time.
