I have a 1997 xplorer 400. It just won't rev out all the way. It's like it hits a wall at a little over 3/4 throttle and then just won't rev out... I cleaned the carb thoroughly, checked jet sizes against the chart in the operator's manual, set airscrew, have a clean air filter, am getting fuel/oil... I also opened the clean outs on the exhaust pipe and ran it... they are clear. I'm not sure what else to check. Could a reed cause this? It idles perfect and works well in low toi mid rpm running, but I can tell it lacks power and then it won't rev out. Please help grgrin.gif I just got done going through it and really want to get it running right. Thanks in advance!

Also, is there a way to tell if the 4x4 is working? I just don't know on these. The light comes on and I know the wires from the magnets are in tact and connected, but I don't ever feel it working... Thanks again grgrin.gif

Sounds like clutch spring is bad. I would replace both the driven and the primary springs.

To test 4wd; raise the machine so all 4 wheels are off the ground. Support the machine well. Turn on the 4wd and start the machine. Start the rear wheels turning and apply a little drag on the front wheel. It should engage and turn. Repeat on the other side.
