My dad snowmobiles solo 1zhelp.gif ...I know, we hate it. But, in the interim, I was thinking of buying him some type of tracking system or locator should "heaven for bid" something happen to him on the trail so we could get to him. Does anyone currently use or have any suggestion of where to start looking for this item? Do any of the GPS Systems include tracking? I'm new to all this...thanks.

Check out this site. www.findmespot.com I have one and used it this season. I also do a lot of solo riding and off in the middle of nowhere type trips. Works as advertised. I also got the auto tracking option service the first year, but did not use it much. I will not get it next season. If I lost unit I would get another one the next day.

This is the link that is sent to people you list in your account with FIND ME SPOT. Here is a picture of where I was when I sent the
OK Check message. The unit is on top of my tunnel bag.

I bought a SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker.

SPOT a satellite personal tracker could be a life saver for those that ride in the backcountry where cell service is not available. I purchased one of these units recently and have tested it out on a couple of rides and it worked as advertised. The unit can send pre-programed messages to email addresses and/or cell phones that you specify and can also do live tracking where your family/friends can watch your movement on Google Earth. I now carry this unit with me whenever I know I will be riding in areas where cell coverage is questionable.

The unit has 4 modes of operation:

Send OK message - sends an email and/or cellphone message to those you specify letting everyone know you are OK. The message includes GPS coordinates of your location and also a link for Goggle Maps so the recipients can see exactly where you are.

Send Help Message - sends an email and/or cell phone message to those you specify that you need non-emergency help. The message includes GPS coordinates of your location and also a link for Goggle Maps so the recipients can see exactly where you are.

Send 911 message - sends a message to a control center that you need emergency help. The message includes GPS coordinates of your location and so emergency help can be dispatched to your location.

Live Tracking - allows anyone you give access to watch your movement on Google Earth in real time.

Read more about it here: SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker Website

The unit is small and has a belt-clip or what I do is carry it in my jacket chest pocket.

That unit is sweet!
I reviewed the website and I am ordering mine today!

2 years ago had a accident in Canada and broke neck, back and hip, had to ride sled out 62 miles.
All OK now, rode this past winter and rented a sat phone for 3 months ($350) and bought annual subscription service medivac for Quebec only for $60.

Spot is cheaper and works much easier.
