Just hoping for advice from those who have removed the steering block (with th bolt that the bellcrank attaches to) from the bulkhead on the pre-crc indy sleds. I know the 4 radius rod bolts go through it but i thought it would then just slide up and out of the bulkhead.....nope, doesn't move! I want to check to see why the steering post bolt is loose.

thanks.

Been a long time, but I think that has to come out from the bottom. I think there are some shims also.
The bellcrank being loose on that pivot point is common.

Actually, it appears as though it is sealed underneath. From the top though it looks like it should slide out as it appears to be sitting in a "channel" (that part of the bulkhead surrounds it bottom back and front but not on top). I'll try to snap a pic and post it.

The bellcrank is definitely loose on the stud (i have new bushings for that), but it also appeared that the stud itself was moving in the block. I tapped it down with a wrench and it started sliding down into the block. I then put the nut on and pulled it up and it got tight again. I wanted to examine the hole for the bolt and see if it is worn because i can't see why it just wouldn't slide down a bit again and get loose since the cranks floats freely on it and won't "hold" it up.

Not saying you are wrong, but I think it is wedge shaped and you also have to remove the brace that is riveted to the belly pan, for it to drop down and out?????? Again, been a long time since I've been in there on a old Indy.

hmmmm, well after i get back from travelling for work i will snap a couple pics. It seemed that way at a glance but you might be right. My jack under the bulkhead was close to that area too so maybe it was hiding something......

Still wondering?

It is a pretty tight fit in the bulkhead. Once you remove the 4 radius rod bolts there is nothing else holding it in. You should be able to move it back and fourth to get it out.

ok here we go, took a couple pics. Been soooo busy with travelling for work i haven't really touched the sled.

It definitely would appear to have to come out the top.
