I will admit, I plan on just "getting out" and enjoying some quiet time in the woods more than anything.
I will be about 60 yds from a swamp, 60 yds from a creek and 60 yards from a field, with me near the middle.

I've got more tukeys in my yard than I know what to do with...thieving little bastards figured out how to get into my girlfriends chicken feed. They don't even run away when the dogs are outside either. Division of wildlife won't relocate them and even though it doesn't look like it from the pics, I do live in the city limits which prohibits discharging firearms so I can't shoot them. Here's a few pics of the back pasture from last summer. I'm standing up basically about 10 yards away from them in the open in these pictures.

Use a bow.
Starts monday for me, price of gas has cut back on my scouting this year, probably will just head out to one of my old reliable spots.
I rarely use decoys anymore, I've had big shy birds coming in and stop out of range when they spot the decoy.
I prefer to hunt more in the woods and stay out of the fields. I'd rather find one good bird in the woods no one else knows about than 10 in a field that every body and their brother has been calling to for the last month.
I did the old cut em off at the pass trick on the tom I got last year, never even called to him, he walked right on to me and took off when I pulled up, got him flying.

I live and hunt in southern maine. Plenty of good pieces to hunt with a lot of nice birds.
I actually got the chance to head out this morning, opening day, before class. We roosted them last night in a good spot about 15 minutes from my house. Got there this morning and set up at about 4:40. Birds came down at about 5:05 and saw some decent birds but nothing worth taking first day. Should be heading out every morning this week so i should have some pictures by the end of the week!

First day in VT i shot a 24 pounder with a 8.5 inch beard, 3/4 in spurs. Its a really heavy bird for the area. Called in a 22 pounder for my dad on the third day, 9 in beard and 7/8 spurs, and finished my season with a 19.5 pound bird with 9.5 inch beard and 1 in spurs on the fourth day. My 2 biggest birds ever and my dads biggest ever.

I winged one the first wednesday of B season with my bow, and since then ive only had jakes within range, and i have shot enough longbeards, that i dont want a jake!! Damn things will NOT come to a call, especially this past week. My father got one 20.5lbs. 8.5'' beard the first wednesday of A season.. Oh well, one week left to give er a go.

are you aggressive yelping?this year i have found better results, with soft yelps, clucks and purring........although when i got my bird on opening day,i could not get a tom to gobble, until i pissed off a hen, with some agressive yelps, and fighting purrs.......2 big toms

Ive tried it all!! We lost a lot of birds around here this spring due to the winter we had. Last fall i counted two hens and 21 young'ns at one place we hunt, this spring there is NINE birds left!!! Jakes will come in, but not the mature longbeards!

Just found this thread. We had a double on opening day, Apr.25, here in Ontario. Took a long time to get the Toms in, but we had 4 hens and 2 jakes messing around us for quite a while, nothing like live decoys

.
Heres the one I got, it rained just after we shot them, so I didnt get the nice field\fan shot. 20 lb.s, 9" beard, 1" spurs

I have my second tag, but havnt seen much the few times Ive got out since, maybe tommorow.
Cheers, Todd

Come on man... 5 days of hunting my dad and I were tagged out with our 4 birds. Are you a good caller? If not what helps I think is watch some turkey hunting shows and listen to how they call and get out of the fields and hunt the woods in late season because birds get very skiddish and dont like to come into the fields... If you get the birds to gobble but they wont come in cut a lot really aggressivly, because they are henned up. (make the hens mad and they will bring the toms in) good luck

xcspkid, you are obviously in a spot where there isnt much hunting pressure, and the toms are responding really well..
I finally got my bird today, and tomorrow is the last day of the season. The birds since the second week would NOT respond to a call at all. The one i got today was my second one with a gun, i got one with a gun 8 years ago, and every year in between i got one with a bow. There are a lot of hunters around here, and its been unusually warm. The turkeys stay in the middle of the fields, all day. It is not always the case of inexperience.

I didnt say thats why he didnt get one and there are a ton of hunters here you almost have to fight for a spot. I was just giving him some tips that could possibly help him out if he didnt have much turkey hunting experience. Congrats on your bird, what did you get?

I figured out what the problem about me not seeing any birds is.I went out into the woods and roosted some birds and i got a few to come in but they came in quit so i waited untill it got dark and got out.Well the i was sitting there and i hear a loud noise and a lot of banging. Then the birds i roosted fley away and i hear some one yell fly fly away.It was the crazy ass tree hugger scaring my birds away. I went over to her and flipped out and she said shes going to call the cops on me for harming animals. So sunday i shot a wood chuck and put it on her porch.Wonder if she liked it?

I dont know about where you live, but here in Maine, if someone did that, THEY would get the fine not YOU. You cant do that its called like harrasing a hunter or something, im not sure the correct wording, but a game warden will ticket the person not you. You shouldve reported them, that might teach them with a $500 fine!
