I have a front wheel bearing that is shot on my 04 GMC 4x4. Does anyone know where I could get a microphich of this set up?
I am going to tackle it myself as i am sure it won't be that hard. If anyone has any tips/tricks or know that you might need special tools please let me know.
Thanks in advance

Mine is a half ton Chevy 4X4. I bought 1 of the Clymer service manuals at a parts store - instructions are in there. You need a big Torx socket to get the caliper off, and you need a 36mm socket to get the big nut off the axle. The bearing and hub are a sealed unit - you have to replace the whole unit. There are just 3 bolts holding the hub to the spindle - not too hard to remove. The hard part is getting the brake disk off of the hub, but since your bearing is bad anyway you can use the big hammer method. I took the hubs/bearings off with the brake disk still on, then pressed the hubs out of the disks with a monster arbor press. GM likes to use special bolts on the calipers and hubs that have small hex heads on big bolts. Don't be surprised if you split some sockets. If you have impact sockets use them.

Thanks Thumper, I am going to give it a shot.. You need a press for the new bearing? Or can you drive it in with a ball pien hammer?

Replacement Hub/Bearing assy is a sealed unit that just bolts on. Expect to pay over $200 per side.

My Dodge had abs sensors, the hub assembly/wheel bearing and all the goods as well, but cost me $379.00 (damn thieves)
I did them both and it was a pain in the dick, but I saved about a $600 in labor

How do you know which one is bad. Ive replaced both of them on my Grand Am and both were making a humming sound when the wheel was turned one way. When it hummed while turing right you need to replace the left wheel bearing I believe. Autozone can loan you the socket and a hub puller for free.

I did both sides on my 01 GMC. All the bolts came out alright and the rotor came off okay too. The hard part for me was that the bearing assembly was rusted in pretty bad. Had to do a lot of hammering to get it out. If you have ever done a complete front brake job, you were half way there.

just did mine on my 00 gmc 4x4 it was very easy only thing youll probably need to get is the hub socket but like said they loan them out at autozone. (beware of dynapax bearings they absolutely suck!!!!!!) I blew one less than a week after putting it in.
but now Im a pro and can do one in about 30 min or less with hand tools.
Only pain in the ass was the brake rotor but nothing a BFH couldnt help. I replaced the rotors at the same time.

Ahh, unit hub bearings. I hate them. I agree with all of the above, easy job that pisses you off all the way through it. I have replaced some on newer GMCs and Dodges at less than 36K (but more than 36months). if the rotors come right loose, the bearings usually do to. if not get a hammer. Can Top Gun get deals on parts? I will PM him next time. $650 for the last set at Fishers.

Guys. Thanks for all the replies. Had to take it to the shop as I needed the truck to tow my trailer to get some items for work. Couldn't do that with the wifes van.
So I took it to the shop. about an hour and $340 cdn to get the bearing done. Works great and yes the mechanic is a friend of mine and he said that if I had the time I should do it myself... Well there is still 3 more that will likely go in the future.LOL
