i am thinking of buying an '08 mxz tnt and just have a few questions:

why is the engine listed as a 500ss while its displacement is 597cc?
along with the 600 ho sdi being at 594cc?

also, what kind of top end does this thing have.. along with bottom end?
are they snappy, quick, er what?

also, how are they holding up in general?

thanks, Jbarnes

The 500 SS is really a 600 cc engine that skidoo called a 500 to help purchasers on the insurance front - ie., less ccs less risk. The 600 HO SDI has less displacement but is the more powerful of the two even though it has less displacement than the 500 SS. Unfortunately it is not available on the 09 TNT you can only buy the 600 etec or 500 SS which is a modification of the sdi which is supposed to be more fuel efficient and cleaner than the old SDI. Since you are buying an '08 the real choice is between the SDI and the SS. The 600 SDI is around the 120 hp mark give or take. I would think the 500 SS is considerably less ie., under 100 hp. I have hit the 170 kph mark on my 600 SDI and would suggest that it is the more powerful engine of the two options.

thanks, they told me the 500ss is around 100 hp, can keep up 0-80 but after that the 600 pulls away..

Everything I'm reading says the 09 TNT is gonna be available with the 500 SS motor.

I liked mine so much, I'm either selling or trading it next fall, and getting a 09 with the 500ss. I just like having a new sled every year. Light and fast, great mileage, stone simple motor that has good longevity. The rear suspension wasn't the greatest, but if you update the rear arm to the 09 version, it is supposed to be better. Go for it.

I ride with two guys that have over 10,000 miles on their 500SS Revs and the motor(or hardly anything else for that matter) has never been touched. They are within 2 MPG and 5 MPH of another guys SDI. For the money, they can't be beat! I would love to try a new E-tec, but for $2500.00 less, a 500SS with do me just fine. Besides, it's proven! The E-tec? Who knows!

One of the guys I rode with this year had an 08 500ss TNT, he loved it, light, quick out of the gate, but like everyone said, no real top end, but then again, up here in Ontario the max speed limit on trails is 30 mph (50km), and let's just say he's happy with the top end especially on the rail beds...

I just bought an '08 GSX 500ss. Not the same as a TNT, but similar. I only had one day prior to the end of the season, but in that 100mile run it was a little slower than my 02 polaris 700 on the top end and was pretty fast off the line. Excellent in the twisties and very easy to throw around.

The 500ss is a very good motor and priced to buy.

the 500ss motor dynos between 105-115hp depending on the motor. they are awsome motors...I love mine, and fuel milage is great too....go for the ss

all the TNT need is some shock work. The rears need revalves, the rebound is too slow and the compression is way off. This is my best recommendation for the XP TNT. I have had great success revalving my TNT customers to get their ride more pleasurable and agressive

i really like mine. i had it at 110mph on the speedo which was 105mph on radar on ice. i put 1600 miles on it when i got it towards the end of the season. it has a good deal of low end torque and will wheelie until 60 or so. 15-17 mpg. seat is a lil stiff but i would try to get a 09 seat. also the shocks are stiff to.

the seat makes all the differance there. I swapped mine for an adreniline style. trust me,the shocks may feel stiff, this is only because they are packing up (not rebounding fast enough) and the compressin is way off! I have tested my set-up to the extreme in the xp and all my customers are satisfied with their money spent. the rear arm update i only recoomend for the sit down plush rider..thats it. now after i got the "X" and tnt shocks figured out i went back to my custom axis and other set, zbroz. these shocks with my valving work very well for agressibe trail and i can still sit when need be.

doo has a poor history with new models and new suspensions. it always takes a season to get them figured out. each year since the late 90's they bugger it up when they come out with something new

Good post guys. I've been looking at them as an option. I sold my FX Nytro. I'm now sled less.. I looking for something thats reliable that I don't have to worry spending a bunch of cash on repairs all the time. This motor is said to be bullet proof. I just don't know if its going to have enough power for me. However with the price of gas these days. I will be happy just to get out for a few runs with the boys. It doesn't really matter if the sled goes 120mph??? The Nytro had its fair share of issues. Those who bleed blue are too proud to come out and admit it. It was a big mistake buying the Nytro. Good engine the rest of the sled leaves more to be desired for. Hammerdown, how much would you charge to do the shocks on a TNT?

thanks for the bump!

the 500ss is the old mxz 600 engine from the 90's. It has been around forever and is bullet proof. I almost bought one but I did not want a first year sled.
