The wife and I are at a point in our lives were we are seriously considering a move. We are considering Juneau Alaska. I was looking for trail systems and riding information up there and since it is so close the the border I thought I would see if anyone knew how the riding was in B.C. since it is so close. I was looking at the map and well.. across the border from Skagway there is well.. nothing.. So, anyone ever ride up that way? If so what is the riding like?

BC has some of the best, if not the best riding in the world, BC is a big province, so cities are rather spread out since we don't have the population the US does, but there is towns up near the border, and I would almost guarentee riding, the problem in BC is the fact that most of the riding here is completely undiscovered, so even if there was incredible riding on the alaska/bc border, which I am sure there is, you may not hear about it, until you become a local, I ride terrain like Revelstoke almost every weekend, but if I was to name it, you would probly have never heard of it, oh well more fresh for me! haha

That is what I thought grin.png We have decided on Juneau but the move isn't going to take place until we do a lot of planning, job searches etc.. etc.. So I take it that BC does not have the groomed trails like the lower parts of Canada or are you saying that the trails that they do have are groomed local. I understand that most of the riding is mountain powder riding but they have to have some type of trail systems right? I would be interested in hearing more if anyone has anything else!

well in the popular areas, like golden, sicamous, revelstoke etc.. there is a maintained groomed trail system by the clubs, I do not believe there is any provincial or federal grooming programs in Canada, I could be wrong, its groomed every couple days, sometimes daily, and very organized. In the areas you are looking at, chances are they are not groomed, if there is a club in the area they could be groomed, but it depends on how well the club is organized, how much money it has etc., but I would not count on it, I know most of the riding I do is not groomed trails, marked trails yes, but they are not groomed, alot of times they don't need it since there is so much area, the riding is so spread out and the trails do not get as beat up, plus new snow weekly heh. There will almost for sure be a trail system, but count on that being some ribbons and markers in trees, not much more than that haha

Good luck to you in your move, sounds like a great lifestyle!

Thanks for the information. I contacted the folks at the Juneau Snowmobile Club and got the skinny on the local riding. As I expected and you and they confirmed it is a lot of un-groomed trail and mountain riding. That's fine with me but the Crossfire is going to have to go along with the wifes Sabercat. So, I guess two M Series sleds are in the picture at some point. I also found out that there are no dealers in Juneau, which again, really didn't surprise me. This is going to be a lot of fun.. I am glad and grateful we have made it to a point in our lives were we could pull something like this off! We are going to head up to check the place out this fall or early winter. Our plan right now is to move sometime next late spring or early summer. I think the wife is just as excited about driving the Alaskan highway up there are she is about getting there.. grin.png

Its beautiful country up there, I too plan on moving north after I make enough to survive comfortably, I am just not a city person, I am very envious of your decision, sledders dream for sure.

By the way, the snowest forum is another great forum for information and its geared a bit more towards mountain riding, they have a local thread in there about northern BC riding, if you havnt already, its another good site to get some info off of.

Well, I guess I will start spending some time on Snowest! Thanks for the tip. As far as being able to move well, our sons are on their own and we really don't have anything tying us to this area. We were never city folk either and since the wife lived in Alaska for a couple of years well.. why not? We are planning on keeping our home here in PA in the event that something happens and we don't like it up there. Always nice to have a backup plan in case.. Hell, anything could happen between now and then but we are planning and checking things out so at least we are moving forward.. buttrock.gif
