Full Version: Why did you buy an FST?

Why did you guys buy yours? Lots of other good sleds out there. I bought mine because first I was mostly just looking at Polaris since my dad had good luck with them and I thought they looked good. Initially I was thinking 600 cause it would enough power, still light and good reputation. But in the back of my mind I was really interested in the 4 stroke and being that i'm an automotive mechanic all the technology was familiar to me. Plus the fact that when a turbocharger is involved the performance possibilities are huge.

So when I went to see the dealer I saw an IQ FST and I was pretty impressed, liked when i saw under the hood. Still not really what I was looking for, I've always gravitated towards long tracks for some reason. So I guess after the salesman gets a feel for what I'm looking for he mentions they have an 07 FST Switch in the shed out back. So bottom line 07 fst switch, 250 miles, slp vent kit already done, and 2 years warranty for just over $7k. I didn't even bother looking after that, just took it home. Happy I did.

I bought mine because my dealer tricked me into it. Bastard. I had blown up my AC Sno Pro, and had given up riding for the year (it was late in the season). There was a big dump, and my dealer (who is also one of my riding partners) asked me to go. I told him "you know darn well my sled is broke because my motor is on your workbench." He told me just to show up and he would have a sled for me to ride. I show up thinking I'm going to be riding a 600 or 900 RMK, but no. He backs the FST Switch out of the trailer. I sighed, but a bad day sledding is better than no sledding, right? Well, after squeezing the flipper the first time, I was sold. Everyone that came into the dealership that year would look at the sled and thought it was great, but no one wanted to be the first one to have it. I am sure a lot of it was that it wasn't an RMK, but lots of guys just didn't trust the four stroke at that time (and for some pretty good reasons!).

In stock form it was smooth as silk, would easily, and I mean easily, pull 100+ mph. It wasn't even that bad in the powder. I had more fun that day than I had snowmobiling in over five years. I think I was one of the lucky guys that has not a single problem with their '06 FST, as there were some serious issues with the sled. There is also the added bonus that I never see another one where I ride. Granted, it will now not do over 90mph in a straight line due to my gearing and track but it is much better in the powder than it used to be. And I love the look on people's faces when I pull up and they realize what I am riding.

Bottom line is that it puts a smile on my face every time I ride it. Now that I have it pretty much set up the way I want, I put a new belt on the first ride of the year, fill it full of high octane gas through the year, and change the oil at the end of the year when I am done. Other than that, just push that little plastic lever to the bar and giggle in my helmet!

We do trail riding 97% of the time and since I mostly go with the wife, I wanted a sled(s) that [are]was comfortable, quiet, smokeless and decent gas mileage and no oil bottles to fill. Some problems but actually just as many as my Ford Expediton. I had polaris and ski doo in the past and perffered the polaris. Still, we have lots of enjoyment with them for our riding style. Speed is plenty fast for us (not trying to be the fastest).

I remember talking to a guy at the dealership who just bought one for his wife and he was concerned that it wasn't as fast as his two stroke and I had to ask him "just how fast do you want to go if 100 mph wasn't fast enough"? He shrugged his sholders and didn't have an answer. Maybe I should have suggested for him to go into aviation and get an airplane....

After riding into Canada for vacation and noticing that most of us in our group had either a four stroke or a long track or both, and I was the only one carrying the $35+ gallon of "valve" oil in the back of my 121"skid , I made up my mind that a long track four stroke was for me! I came home and started shopping. Got a good deal on a Switchback FST and so far so good. Had a few bugs that my HCS friends have helped me with. Couldn't be happier.

Dave although nothing to do with your post the lost guy up here was found tonight at 6 pm he walked out to the highway 4 days later. at mile 58 north of us. he managed to flag down a bus. Dont know all the particulars yet but have to give him credit, nobody thought he was even alive. He could here the planes and choppers but couldn't see them. -18 at nights walking up to your waist in snow for 4 days, not good. He was no where near the area that he said he was traveling to. he went straight north instead of south.

Why did I buy this thing. The price and did not want to smell like a chain saw anymore. Should of keeped my f6 and waited to the following year or buy a Yamaha. The Alternator went on it three weeks ago. I was lucky this time got it covered by Polaris. Next time it goes it's 450 dollar bill from the dealer. Man I have no idea where the savings is by driving a four stroker. 450 for an alternator every year or 450 on oil. That thing should last longer than they do. Only had 2700 miles on it. My cars got 117k and the alt is still good. Going to keep it one more year maybe. I have had no lick with it. It's been in the shop more than I have rode it. Sorry maybe it's just my luck maybe they are better. Well like they say if it was not for bad luck I would have no luck at all.
Seasons done tome to get out the quad and yes it is from polaris. 07x2 800 this bike is great love it.

My father and I had been out of sleds for 8 years or so. A buddy of his had a couple of extra sleds and invited us out. I rode his Vector and fell in love with 4 strokes in sleds. The torque is addictive and they don't scream the same. Much more subtle. We both figured we'd buy Yammies because of their engines. Could have got a good deal on an Attak, but once I rode the IQ, there was no comparison. Looked into the Weber and all seemed good, knew they resolved the teething issues. Have owned it for two weeks and put 525 miles on it. 105 on the lake and a wicked pull corner to corner. 19 MPG imperial gal (about 16 MPG US gal I think). No regrets whatsoever. I consider myself a good judge of a trail sled and Polaris really put together a good package with this one. I know an older gentleman who's ridden and sold sleds since they came out. His son owns a dealership and he could ride any Yamaha or Polaris he wants. He told me the best sled he's ever ridden was this year's FST IQ LX. That's saying alot.

Link should work. Should have read St. Martin jct not LSM as it is 30 miles east.

He is a commercial fisherman that went ahead of his group to go get vendor. that was at 2 pm last sat none heard from him since then. he went completely 180 degrees the wrong way, 60 miles north instead of south.
