Hey, i am taking the motor from my 1996 zrt 600 and putting it into a 1998 powder extreme, the plug-ins off the stator are different from my 96. so i was wondering if you think i could put a 1998 stator in my 96 motor and it would work? any info appreciated, thanks.

I would do a little bit of checking,,I think the 98 is differant ,they ran with a closed system for a few years and switched to an open system ,98 might be when that happened...check babbits online parts and cross the part number..good luck

I went back and reread your post...the motor is a 96 going into a 98 chassie,,as long as you use all of the 98 components you should be OK,,Don t try to mix cdi s or anything..better luck

alright thanks.
are you sure the stators are different? i have a 1997 and 2000 and have swapped cdi's to figure out a no spark issue and i believe they had the same connecters, even though they may have different color wiring they still will plug in the same and function the same. the part numbers may be different but they will fisically still work together. stators are all basically built the same. when you pull the engine over it gets juice from the low speed coil on the stator, when it reaches a certain rpm it gets it's juice from the high speed coil. the lighting coil is seperate from the ignition coils. then if you have efi there is another coil that drives the ecm. the efi stators won't work on a carb model. but if you are looking for a stator the zr580 zr500 zr 600 will work even though they have a different part number. the stators look the same. the 1998 and up cdi were normally open. the 1997 and back cdi are normally closed. so the kill switch, carb switches and ignition switch has to stay with the matching cdi. the stator has nothing to do with the kill switch in wether it is open or ground, that is all done in the cdi.

well im pretty sure that on the zrt's in 95 and 96 the stator plugs are the same, but in 97 they changed them over. because i looked in this 98 chassis and the plug ins are way different than my 96, so im pretty sure to make this work i have to get a 1998 stator correct?

the stators should be the same i installed a 1996 zrt 600 motor in my 1997 after the original motor let go to not being summerized properly by the previous owner. if you go to alpha sports and look up the stators for the 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 they are the same. in 2001 and 2002 the motor had power valves so it uses a more robust stator.
I have a 96 900 eng. in 99 frame the kill switch and key works opposite to shut off because they changed the ground to kill in 98.You should be the same with your 600.the stators are the same until the 3d ignitions those really suck.

thanks, you guys were right...... while i was trying hard to get this sled cleaned up i took the coils out of the sled and put them on the floor. and when i tried to hook my stator up i forgot that i had put the coils out and then the hook ups were different because i was looking at the wrong ones. they werent even in there! one of the stupidest mistakes i have ever made...... thanks for the help though i appreciate it. sorry for wasting your time. oh well, gotta learn from my mistakes haha.

glad we could help. by the way the big block zrt and thundercat are different than the 600 so nothing will interchange.
I would say the coils and cdi are the same on 6,8,9,in those years.
