Snowmobile Season Extended in Upper Peninsula

A lingering, dense snow pack over most of Michigan's Upper Peninsula has led Department of Natural Resources officials to extend grants to groom the state-managed snowmobile trail system through April 6. The usual date to conclude trail grooming is March 31.

"The U.P. has been blessed with late snowfall and continuing cold weather, so the trails have remained in great shape over most of the region, and that's great news for snowmobilers looking for a wonderful place to enjoy another ride before they put their machines away for the season," said Steve Kubisiak, DNR Recreation and Trails coordinator.

Michigan's U.P. also benefits from a large group of dedicated trail grooming sponsors, including many snowmobiling clubs, who are vigilant and professional in maintaining the trails, Kubisiak added.

"Another reason the trails can remain open longer this spring is the result of the high-quality grooming performed by our trail sponsors," he said. "It is that level of care that goes into maintaining the trails all season long that allows us to keep them open another week."

Michigan's trail system encompasses over 6,500 miles of groomed and maintained trails, in one of the most diverse interconnected systems in the country. The U.P. has over 3,000 miles of trails, all of which will remain open to snowmobilers for the extended period.

"It is not often that we can give riders this great opportunity, so we are inviting snowmobilers to head north to the U.P. and enjoy an exhilarating late-season riding experience."

For detailed information about each trail, those planning to visit the area are encouraged to contact local DNR staff or trail-grooming sponsors to get precise information about that portion of the system they are interested in riding.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.

Pick your riding areas wisely, I will honestly tell you I would not ride in the Soo right now, It's snowing right now and they are calling for 5 inches. that may ring things back to life but my personal opinion is that the only thing that will make our trails in the soo rideable again is next december.

If I were to go back up this weekend, I would stick to an area north of 28 and between Paradise and Munising. Grand Marais or Seney would a good central location for the deep stuff

How are the trails in the Michigamme, Ishpeming, Gwinn, Republic, Big Bay area? It looks like they will receive 16+" from this storm alone in that area west of Marquette.

FWIW, I've rode near the end of April north of Paradise, staged off of Vermillion Rd where the trail crosses. Take gas cans and ride until you run out of snow, then back. Had friends do this a few years back during the first week of May. They camped out in a RV on that road.

I'm assuming that the DNR will allow grooming on the state-owned trails, but not on private property owned trails because their insurace only goes through the end of March, right? If so, how difficult is it to get around using only state trails?
