I bought a 2002 rmk from a guy who knew nothing about sleds. It came without a key but the ignition slot was pointed to the premium setting and the sled runs fine. In looking closer, the connector on the back of the key ignition was disconnected and the whole key receptacle was spun to point to premium. I am not worried about security, but would the sled run better with the fuel type selector? Is it that easy to bypass the key security on Polaris sleds? I would probably only get a new key/lock if it made the sled run better. What setting (octane) would it be set for as described? Any info would be appreciated.

On my o1 600 when your switch is in Premium fuel setting a light comes on on the speedo or tach I can't remember which. If the light isn't coming on I would guess you're not in the premium setting anyway.

About a 300rpm gain in premium mode, very noticeable.

Not sure whats correct, but I've heard that unplugged key switch would make it default to premium setting.
I'm sure you can get a new key that fits your lock, see if theres any markings on the lock, then consult your dealer

With ignition unplugged it automatically goes to prem. The only function of the switch while in premium is to light the dash indicator. The ignition has to MAKE a connection to go into reg fuel mode.

I have the same year 800 RMK. It was an $850 basket case but it ran. I almost have it completly rebuilt from the ground up. I have started to sort out the rats nest of wiring. I was planning on ditching the switch but didn't know it affected the timing until reading this. Luckily It looks like the removal won't hurt performance.
So far I haven't started it but it does have very good spark. However the kill switch and the ignition don't kill the spark with the key off or the kill switch in the off position. Have to figure that out. Does anyone have any suggestions? It does have a Pro XR 440 style throttle and kill switch so I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

Look in your harness down by the stator for a single black or black/white wire with a plastic connector. If this is unplugged, key switch, kill sw, and throttle safety switches are bypassed

Polaris was actually smart with their switch setup. If a switch is unplugged the machine will still run. That goes for the key and the kill switches.
ZGJethro, Be careful with that 800 on the premium setting. Make sure you are running at least 91 octane fuel. If in doubt get a new key switch so you can revert back to the regular position. Lack of octane on the premium setting can cause, I think it's called "predetination". Or a new top end in other words. The 8's seem to be more prone to this than the 7's.
