I am trying to change out the driveshaft bearing (clutch side) on my 95 XLT. Can the bearing be changed with out pulling the chaincase apart? I pulled the secondary and the bolts that hold the speedo gear housing off and the set screws that are on the collar (inside the tunnel). The manual says to spin the collar by hitting it with a hammer and chisel, opposite direction of rotation, but its not moving.

thanks,
matt

Make sure it's not the integral locking collar bearing, if it's the 2 piece bearing, just chisel through the punch hole till it splits.

How do I know if its a integral locking collar bearing?

You should see a separation between the collar and the bearing instead of the collar going right inside the bearing (attached to the inner race). There will be one set screw and then one open hole on the locking collar style. On the one piece unit there will be 2 set screws.

ok, I got it off. What a pain. it had the 2 set screws.

So which type are you replacing it with?
