I had a conference to attend on Saturday in Port Hawkesbury so I thought the best thing to do was mix work and pleasure. A fellow worker (Paul) that came with me had never been to the Highlands before, he is from the Valley. We spent Friday sliding around a small part of the Highlands. The weather was great and the trails were very good. This is the first time I have been to the Highlands in two years, its been too long what a great day. We started from the Hunter Mtn road and traveled to Cape Clear. Paul was awe struck at the view. From there we traveled to Wreck Cove for gas. Once you pass the power plant there were two bad spots, a brook washed out and a hill bared up. We went in and out with out trouble, we did meet a couple of guys from Halifax on Yami's that were having trouble on the hill when we were heading out. From there we traveled on the 816 & 814, then turned across the top of the North River Wilderness Area and on to the Pig and Whistle. The fire was on and there were about 7 other sledders there when we pulled in. We talked to them for a while and then everyone pulled out. We head back down the main road till we hit the 710 that takes you on a great trail southerly behind Baddeck and back the the Hunter Mtn rd. This was a spectacular trail except for about 5 miles around Baddeck where the snow got very thin. The trail went on the paved road at one point and across a steel bridge to cross a river, when we got to the other side we lost the trail and headed off in the wrong direction(of course). Within 1/2 a mile we realized, turned, came back, and found the trail. This was the only time we got turned around all day. There will be sledding up top for a couple of weeks yet I would think. Grooming was going on wide open, at one point we came across two groomers together having a chat and a coffee at an intersection. What a great day!
