Hey everyone, it's me again with a couple questions about my Indy. I swear this website is making me more knowledgable about my sled but there are still a few things I need to know....Problem #1 - my speedo works but it jumps up and down between 0 and 30 mph after that it smoothens out?. I checked the cable, seems good and the speedometer itself and it looks ok. Problem #2 - is there a rad cooler at the front of the track on my 94 xlt?. There is what looks like a cooler in front of the track which has taken a beatin' from the studs. I always thought there were only the 2 under the running boards?...should I be concerned?.

I had that same speed-o jumping issue with my sled, your issue could be similar to mine although there are a few others potential problems like a bad speedometer or flakey 90 degree feeder or your driveshaft bearing could be going.

I had taken my sled to a yamaha shop to have the Driveshaft bearing replaced and they also replaced the speed-o key and insert. The speedometer started bouncing after a about 30 miles and when it wasn't bouncing it was at about half speed and then it stopped completely.

I took the 90 degree speed o feeder off and found the insert and speed o key 1/2 way out of the drive shaft. you can see the pictures at http://www.hardcoresledder.com/forums/inde...howtopic=331440 . When I pulled the insert out it was bent. I bought a new insert and speedo key from polaris ($19). I also found the new key was a little longer than the one from the Yamaha dealer so there is no room for the insert to loosen off with the 90 degree feeder on tight.

Was out yesterday for the first ride since the change and the speed o worked the whole time and the odometer kept track with the other sled

Hope this helps

Snarky, I would be doing the driveshaft bearing especially with the miles that you have on it......easy job. Bearings will cause that problem and will eventually snap that key right off. If left long enough the bearing can end up doing damage in the tunnel. In the off season i would recommend doing all 4, then you know they are all fresh and will be problem free.

Yes ther is a cooler in front of the track. Watch your track tension because if the studs go in very far, they will cut right in and you will lose all your coolant. Not a fun thing out on the trail. You can also get cooler protectors to protect it. They bolt in.
