wouldnt dropping the top gear 2 teeth cause the engine to work harder to spin the cogs? if you think about it, the top gear has to spin even faster to drive the bottom gear. am i thinking this out right??
if you relate it to a car then yes....well, still only even sort off. In an CAR, yes the rpm would be higher with a lower gear ratio but you will be able to move the vehicle easier as you get up to the powerband quicker and you end up with more torque to the ground to move you quicker (translates to less load on the motor). If you didn't have overdrive or went nuts with the gear ratio then yes, you will be working the snot out of the car if you were always at a crazy high rpm. But with a sled, in addition to the gears you have the CVT clutch system which senses torque load on the track and adjusts accordingly by shifting the clutches further (than the other gear ratio). So there will actually be less stress on the engine because again, it gets into the powerband quicker and more torque to the track to accelerate you quicker (it doesn't lug the engine as much when a load is sensed...like deep snow or a big hill). But it sometimes also depends on what else you do in combination as to the ultimate outcome for performance/fuel economy/top speed etc
